Planned Outage: Out West?

I just received a notice by email from TSI announcing an internet outage from "Thursday, April 12, 2012, from 0001 EST to 0600 EST (midnight to 6 am) and Friday, April 13, 2012, from 0001 EST to 0600 EST (midnight to 6 am)".

Does this affect us out west?

During this time our high speed Internet access will be affected. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your continued patronage.

Thanks for the clarification. I hope you understand that we're used to assuming in Telusland that most of these discussion (good and bad) don't actually apply to us.

Ouch, why did you guys pick Friday the 13th?

So I guess IPv6, DSL speed matching, and DOCSIS 3.0 may become a reality sooner than later. How do we deliver the Timmies to Gabe? R0CKY and Marc need to show face in the West like Dave Dobbin (formally of Mobilicity) did with his gathering of local geeks.

I think you probably mean PDT and not PST. Sorry if I come across as pedantic, but this affects me personally and professionally, so I prefer to be clear on this point.

Try to get some rest before tomorrow night. Jet lag and night shifts are both killers.

Hopefully my dynamic DNS updater does what it's supposed to this time (I'm away from home for another two weeks). Failed to update to the new IP the last time my connection was knocked offline (which was due to massive interference generated by a faulty power brick elsewhere in the house).

Yes, I know, I should stop being a cheap-ass and just get a static IP...

How the hell are you going to toy with IPv6 without the $4 fee?

AFAIK TSI still only has a single transit provider out west. Are there any plans for picking up a second feed from LLNW? or some of the other providers in Vancouver like TATA / Inteliquent (TInet) or Hurricane?

fluffy

@teksavvy.com

hopefully. their transit is half full right now and once the rest of the BC/AB horde gets speeds like us in van the link will quickly oversaturate. They only have a single 1 Gig link out right now and its at 500megs steady state.
Heres hoping my speedtest continues to be the same post upgrade :

The upgrade went as planned last night but you will likely not see any real difference until tonight when I start re-routing traffic towards new routing equipment.

Damnit, stupid POS dynamic DNS updater failed to update again. Gonna have to get someone to connect to my network and browse to whatismyip.com.

That's it, I'm getting a static IP as soon as I get back home! Should have done that years ago.

Looked like a fairly smooth maintenance from here. Can you say whether you expect our pppoe session will disconnect at all tonight?

pppoe won't disconnect at all tonight, though routing out to the internet in general will go down for a few minutes.

Thanks for the clarification. My router has a bug that prevents it from automatically reconnecting pppoe, so it's kind of a big deal. Not that I won't check things out at the end of the maintenance window regardless, but at least I can lower the defcon level a notch.

If you have open ports, you might try scanning TSI's IP space on those ports. I've found wayward machines with this method before.

Well what do you know... I scanned all IP addresses in the same block as my previous IP for ports 80 and 443. This returned 4 IP addresses that had both ports open. Then it was a simple matter of plugging each IP into my web browser to find the right server.

Luckily, the new IP I was assigned falls in the same block as my old IP.

So yeah, no need to make any phone calls to find my IP.

Static IP is definitely on my to do list when I get back.
