Honda vs. Chevy

I'm considering a few used vehicles and I'm sort of lost comparing them... I've narrowed it down to a few sedans:

2005 Honda Accord (4 cyl) EX with 71K. They want $11K.
2009 Honda Accord LX with 70K. They want $15K.
2011 Chevy Impala LT with 32K. They want $15K.

I think the safe bet is probably one of the Honda's, most likely the '05 because it has same miles at the '09 and is $4K cheaper... $4K might go a very long way on age related repairs/service needed.

But the Chevy is interesting to me because it's newer and far fewer miles. I also tend to like the "feel" of domestic brands vs. imports.

I'm looking for something reasonably reliable for the next 5 years.

Aren't the Honda's assembed in the U.S. now anyway? Thought I read or saw that somewhere.

Sorry, didn't mean to imply I care where it's made or who the parent company is (I don't)... I literally meant that I tend to like the way that domestic sedan's feel--softer transmission shifts at lower RPMs, larger seats, column shift, bigger trunk, etc...

But I'm willing to forego that if someone says "Yeah that 3500 engine in the Chevy stinks" or "Honestly the Accords will just last much longer" or something along those lines.

I know of no better long term reliability data than that compiled by Consumer Reports; there may be better out there, I'm just not aware of it.

The Accord has proven to be among the most reliable cars made for the past 20 years or more, according to the CR data. I currently drive a 2000 Accord with 190,000 miles. Have the 05 checked out by a mechanic, but you will likely get years of good service out of it.

Just for the record, the last (3) cars we've owned have been Hondas. That said, according to CR, the 2011 Impala is a very good car. I'm skeptical of the data they have for such a new model, so I looked at the '09 and '10 and they're equally good.

If you're expressing a preference for domestic brands the Impala is a fine car; looks like a highway driver based on the mileage so wear will be minimal if oil changes were kept up. Look for the Flex-Fuel badge on the trunk lid; that means you can fill up with E-85 as well as gasoline (Honda doesn't offer that).

As for the Accords, my preference would be for the 2005; I had an '06 VP and it was a fine machine. The EX has a lot of nice features and the four cylinder is very efficient and reliable motor.

The Honda cars are made like the Honda Motorcycles....Change fluids every 5k and drive it for 200k.

GM took the bailout and abandoned all of its pre 2008 warranty customers.Uncle Ed hasnt missed a single dime of him Executive bonus' and guess who footed the bill???? The American Taxpayer!

As I mentioned before, I have no "American" vs. "Foreign" issues... I don't care what nationality the brand name sounds like, or where it was assembled... I care about it being a) reasonably fuel efficient / economical, b) large enough for 4 adults, c) reasonably safe, d) comfortable...

I've got an appt w/ the Honda dealer's internet salesman for Sat morning... I've been on the buying fence for a while now as my current car is getting older and somewhat less reliable, but the threat of $4/G gas thru the summer, and potentially forever, means a lot to me because the difference between my current 17MPG car and a 30MPG car will be about $120/mo. I've been banking $200/mo for a replacement car (my "payment"), so with some good fortune my budget should have zero impact as a result of buying, perhaps I'll even have some cash freed up...

Anyway, the more I think about it the more I realize I'll likely end up with a Honda:

- a 2.4L 4-cyl will get better mileage than a 3.5L 6-cyl
- a 2005-2009 Accord will likely have the same or better resale value in 2017-ish then a 2011 Impala will
- In the case of the 05 Accord it's listed $4K cheaper then the other cars I'm looking at, that buys a lot of gas & repairs

This is a commuter car, pure and simple. I want something that can drive me to work 95% of the time... and 3+ passengers the other 5% of the time.

About a year ago I purchased a 2007 Accord EX-L with ~30k miles. I'm up to about 48k now. I drive it approximately 50 miles a day to and from work, mostly but not exclusively highway. I'm happy with it and have taken several trips with it and my family of 5 as there is ample trunk space as compared to our Rendezvous.

The only knock that I have for it is that it's not as fun as it could be. It's not a cruising sedan...and it's not a tight sports car. It's somewhere in between, the average of the two.

If you're looking for fuel economy comparisons just go to the government site at: »www.fueleconomy.gov/

You can even do a side-by-side comparison of the cars you're interested in.

I bought a '98 Chevy Malibu in 2001, with around 33k miles or so on it. It was a great car until the engine went at 99k miles and the cost to replace was more than the blue book value so I had to scrap it.

I decided to go with a new 2006 Honda Civic, EX. Love the car and would seriously get another Honda or Toyota.

I hear Chevy has improved a lot on the quality but still have a way to go before I'll fork over the cash for it.

Go with the Chevy. I have always owned a Chevy and I feel they are the best cars on the market.

As a family that has owned a few Taurus' over the years, I have been generally disappointed with FWD domestics, the transmissions in particular, which is one reservation I have about the Chevy.

I have driven Impalas, or their other GM cousins, as rentals a dozen times, and liked them, but they were all sub-30K vehicles. I assume the rental agencies know something and that is why they tend to unload them at about 30k where as I have received Nissan rentals from Hertz with 50k...

That's not always true. Remember, the 4-cylinder will have to work harder to move sometimes the same weight. Check the MPG between the 4-cyl and V6 Accords for any 2000+ model year. They'll be within 1-2 miles per gallon of one another.

have to agree, my 3.8 grand prix got very similar gas mileage to my 2.4 sunfire. in the grand prix at 100km/h the engine is barely breaking a sweat at 1200 rpm

Get the Chevy. Best car I ever owned was a 1992 Chev Lumina with 3.1 V6. Drove her to 2005 with over 250,000 kms on her. Sold it to a neighbor who is still driving it. Never touched the engine or tyranny except for oil changes & spark plugs. Currently driving a 2000 Impala with 3.8 V6. This engine is considered built proof... Impala has a much better ride then the Lumina.

Yeah, Love Chevys. Got a 1960 Vette waiting to come out of winter hibernation...

Parts are cheaper and maintenance. Costs are low. Ever notice a lot of taxis & police cars are Impalas....
