Polycom Soundpont 301 SIP, plz share your experience with it

Dear friends

Sorry for opening a new topic after asking for advice for simple cheap sip phone.

Anyway because of my budget I ended up buying a Polycom Soundpoint 301 SIP phone in an auction. Unfortunately there was no time to come here and ask for your comments.

I am going to use it mostly (but not only) for member to member calls thru Callcentric or Voip.ms.

If you have any experience with it, know its pros and cons or any tips and tricks, limitations or advantages, Please share with me.

Thank you

Pro's:

- It's a Polycom so it sounds great
- Good speakerphone
- Good build quality, feels good in the hand
- Good keypad
- POE capable

Con's:

- Running the v3.x firmware the web GUI can be frustrating
- Not enough memory to move into newer firmware loads
- Limited LCD size & resolution
- I doubt the LCD is backlit, but it might be
- No HDVoice (SoundPoint IP335 is the entry level HD capable model)
- Has an RJ9 type headset connector. Newer IP320/330 models have 2.5mm connector which allows the use of cheaper consumer analog headsets.
- Product is beyond end-of-life, so don't expect much support from anyone but other users.

My employer started using a bunch of SoundPoint IP430 & IP600 models. We've since moved to IP450/550/650 so that we can enjoy wideband audio for inter-office calling.

I still have one or two older models (IP500?) that I've been meaning to list for sale for the past few months.

Dear mgraves1

Thanks for your reply. As I am going to use it maybe an hour a day with Callcentric and voip.ms member2member free calls and considering my slower than 512kbps internet, I think I can ignore con's like LCD issues, HD Audio and headset.

It would be appreciated if you tell me some more about Firmware and Bootrom stuff.
Will I need to upgrade them (and as you said I may not be able due to memory limit) in near future to use my Callcentric and or voip.ms services?
I dont know anything about upgrading its firmware and bootrom too if there would be any available for mine.

Do you think it is a plug and go phone for this purpose because other than me, other people will use it too in my absence which may not know anything about sip!! They like to pick up the handset and dial!

Seems I missed your sale
I bought mine for $18 excluding shipping. It is new in box. I dont know if it was a good deal or not.

Member-to-member calls on CallCentric are free (all over the world, not just North America) and easy.

No separate phone number (DID) is needed. Each person just calls the 1777xxxxxxx CallCentric number of the other party. No funding is required at all if the free "CallCentric IP Freedom" account is chosen.

To paraphrase Joe Biden, if it works it's a freaking good deal.

Member 2 Member calls on most voip providers would benefit from HD Audio if both parties had adequate hardware.

But for $18, I think you did just fine. You can always upgrade down the road and likely get your $18 back on ebay.

Yup! For that price as long as it works you're golden!
