UltraTV HomeConnect not working with Windows Media Center!

I want to watch movies I have on my computer on my TV. I hooked up Windows Media Center on my computer but My UltraTV box can't see my computer. Anybody know how to make this work? Is there a better program that's free that I can use? I tried asking WOW customer service and they are clueless! Please help!

I have a dedicated DLNA server on my network, so I haven't used anything on my Windows PCs, but the manual states:

Although many DLNA servers will work with HomeConnect, the following DLNA servers have
been fully tested with your Media Player. (Note: Each DLNA server is unique and may vary
slightly for setup and troubleshooting. Some DLNA servers are free and some are fee-based.)
* Windows Media Connect (Operation System Support: Windows)
* TVersity Media Server (Operation System Support: Windows)
* TwonkyMedia Manager (Operation System Support: Mac, Windows, Linux)
* PlayOn (Operation System Support: Windows)

Windows Media Connect is part of Windows Media PLAYER - not Windows Media CENTER. If you Google it, there are instructions online on how to activate it in Windows Media Player.

Did you copy paste that? Does it really say operation system?

Yep...I did copy and paste. I just went back and looked and it does indeed say "operation system".

UltraTV couldn't see my media server with a router between them on the network. I swapped the router for a switch, and everything started working.

I suspect it might have something to do with broadcast packets not being passed through the router, but since that fixed it, I didn't do much more research.

will HomeConnect detect a DLNA NAS on a network straight away?

I've got a Synology DiskStation and once I configured it, it showed up in HomeConnect.

do the media players support mkv? is there any info on this homeconnect or the formats that are supported?

That would make perfectly good sense being that the entire point of a router is to segment traffic into different networks (a.k.a Broadcast domains).

I am still testing, but so far the media players haven't played an MKV for me. They see the file, but when I try to select it, I get an error message about an unsupported file type.

I created an mp4, but I am only getting audio out of that an no video. I am going to try and play with it this weekend and figure out what I can and cannot get working.

I would love to hear from someone else that's tried it to see if anyone got an MKV to play. If you try please report back with your results.

I feel like I tried to get one to work before and it didn't but I am not 100% sure if that was the file type I tried. I didn't do much to try to get it to work at the time, though.

Try mkv2vob. Latest release is borked, get one that is slightly older.

I have gotten .mkv files to work by simply renaming the file to .avi. Give that a try, see what it does.

I could play MKV files just fine.

I downloaded the game of thrones box set which is in MKV format. Yes I plan on buying the box set next week after I get paid, I just wanted to preview it early.

They all played beautifully. Although I got brief nanosecond flashes of static from time to time. Could have been lag streaming from my computer I don't know.

I did find out going back to live TV, I lost sound and the video output was jumping all over the place. It would jump around forward and backward during the commercials I was watching. I finally just turned my TV off and went to bed.

edit: ohh to fix live TV I had to pull the power on the remote box and then plug it back in to reset it.

has anyone tried renaming the mkv to avi and had success?

I renamed one of the MKV's to AVI. It worked fine except I didn't get the preview pane in the list like I did with the MKV's.

Last night I had a few MKV's not show up when they showed up before.

To fix the issue, I opened Windows Media Center, went to "Settings", then went to "Media Libraries", click on the "Videos" bubble to select it, click on the "Add folders to the library" bubble, then "On this Computer (includes mapped networked drives)".

I then selected the folders that contained my videos and it found all the videos in those folders.

When I went back to the TV, I had all my MKV's showing up again. Instant fix.

PlayOn just added some new Transcoding settings for local media files.
