 | Is $33/month for 6.0Mbps a good or bad deal? I keep on reading on forums how people have ridiculously high internet speeds for low monthly amounts. I don't understand how some areas charge less than others.
In any case, I'm wondering for the Los Angeles area, is $33 a month for 6.0Mbps (~5.2Mbps actual speed test) a good deal or am I getting ripped off? |

| It all depends on what options you have. What other plans are available in your area?
If I could get that speed here in NH for $33 a month I'd jump at it.
Currently I pay $36 a month for 3 Mbps and would gladly pay 40 for 7 it it were available.

 | reply to priceq Other options I have are:
768 Kbps for $19 (+ tax) 1.5 Mbps for $20 3.0 Mbps for $25 8.0 Mbps for $100 10.0 Mbps for $120
I don't have cable television service.
DSL pricing schemes make no sense to me whatsoever. |

| reply to priceq Depends where you live, you can get 25/25 on fios for $44 a month here. DSL is more expensive overall, but that is due to their limitations. There is only so much you can do over long distance copper lines.
Check your cable providers in the area, but be aware they also start their packages fairly high, they might have an overpriced 1Mbit plan for $25, and then the normal plans are like 15Mbit for $40. It just depends on who services your area. -- I distrust those people who know so well what god wants them to do because I notice it always coincides with their own desires- Susan B. | reply to priceq So all of these people saying they have XX Mbps for reasonable amount may have cable.
Too bad cable TV service is expensive. I currently have Dish, and actually was planning on cancelling that since I rarely watch TV. And of course Dish's internet promotion is a joke. |

| Here you can get fios(fiber) without tv, or phone service being mandatory. The fiber provider is also the dsl provider.
The cable provider here doesn't want you to have service without some level of tv service, and even if you get internet only they will charge you $10 for putting a filter on your line just so they can charge you more so it's not really any real savings, but it is faster.
Nobody wants to offer the $20 a month with a basic plan that most people would be happy with as it's not profitable for them. -- I distrust those people who know so well what god wants them to do because I notice it always coincides with their own desires- Susan B. | reply to priceq Like others have said, you don't have to get cable tv to get cable internet. Drop DSL and sign up for cable internet if it's cheaper/faster. |

 | I never had cable in my life so this is new to me. I live in an area that is served by Time Warner Cable, so that is my only choice, right?
I entered my info and there is an offer for "up to" 10 Mbps for $30 for the first 12 months.
Also what does cable installation involve to have internet capability? My apartment doesn't have cable wiring, at least not that I know of. The TV outlet is for an outdoor antenna. When we installed satellite it was easy as drilling a hole in the wall and bringing in the line from the roof. |

BlitzenZeusBurnt Out CynicPremium join:2000-01-13 kudos:2 | Most apartments are pre-wired for the local providers, cable, and dsl. Many won't even allow sat installs, and force you to get cable if you want pay tv this way. |
|
 | reply to priceq As said; it depends on your options, not too long ago $30 got you 768k. And since the only other option was dial-up for $20 we had no choice.
If what you have IS your option, then yeah, it is okay. |
