At what speed is a DOCSIS 3.0 modem necessary?

I'm not sure what the service tier that I have is called, but I get about 20-21 Mbps steady (not burst) download speeds. My modem is a Motorola SB5120.

Is there any advantage to having a DOCSIS 3.0 modem at this speed tier?

If you have issues with congestion or speeds slowing down during peak hours, a DOCSIS 3 modem (assuming your area has channel bonding) can help alleviate that.

there are advantages to any speed tier.....while you may not see any increase in speed, you will be helping manage the network you share with others.....i wouldnt necessarily run out and buy one, but swapping it out for a new modem (if you lease) wont cost you anything....

Generally, Comcast wants the use of a DOCSIS 3.0 modem for Blast (20Mbps+ down) tier or higher.

I agree with nysports4evr and gar187er that a D3 modem will give other advantages on lower speed tiers.
