Unfortunately, it is quite confusing. iMessage works as advertised when you use Apple IDs to send messages - conversations on all devices update at the same time.

However, if you use a phone number on the iPhone, it won't always show on the other devices. Right now, I can send a message to a phone number on the Mac and it shows up in the existing SMS thread on my phone, but it started a new conversation on the receiver's side (presumably using my Apple ID as the return address).

Throwing phone numbers into the mix without a centralized point to store them really screws the whole thing up.
