Re: My Smart-meter story

By your description, it sounds as if you never informed the utility of your solar system?

You should have a executed this agreement with the power company

Here is the legal on net-metering with your utility

And the new meter with TOU can make you more money

»sol-up.com/?best_price

The bottom line is by default, any new meter counts energy as consumed, this is a thieft prevention. With solar systems, when ever the AC cycles off, your sending energy to the grid, so this gets counted as energy you bought and yes that's incorrect

You need to contact your utiliities renewable energy office to get things legal and square, if I mis-understood this and you have these agreements, then it IS a simple update to the meter

I'm surprised he would even be allowed to net meter without an agreement. So I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt here. This sounds like more of a bureaucratic snafu rather than an unauthorized renewable energy system.

However, if he did just put a solar energy system without a net metering agreement and a power purchase agreement, that is just plain stupid. Not only are you risking the wrath of the poco but you are also giving up selling your excess power AND generating SRECs which can sell for a few hundred dollars...each! Yes, that's power companies paying YOU money for energy you generate for your own use... a couple hundred in the bank for every 10,000kwh generated, in other words about once or twice a year. Hello! Free money!!!

EDIT: nevermind, looks like Nevada doesn't have a SREC program. But we do here in NJ, and they can go for up to almost $700 each. Usually less but I've seen market prices for them that high.

We shall see, His utility has TOU for solar, so they know how to do it ...

I've read a lot of posts on another forum about people going gorilla on the solar ... so I admit I am biased
