I kind of wish they built "intelligent" power strips and chargers. That once it senses it's not being used it can shut itself off/go to a sleep type mode.

Actually they do. I just recently came across power strips at our local Fry's Electronic store that have a master outlet where power consumption is monitored. If power level on the master outlet drops to a level that indicates the device is off (e.g.: computer) it automatically turns off power on the slave sockets (e.g.: monitor, printer, scanner, modem).

These power strips have been around for decades.

The $30 device would need to save a lot of electricity to be ultimately worth it. It is obvious that it uses power itself - so it cuts SOME consumption for periods of time while adding new consumption all the time. How much while outlets are active? How much while outlets are disabled?
