But he then goes on to note that recovery disks from HP cost $15.80 plus shipping/handling of $6 or $12. Which hardly makes the Comet price look out of line.

Perhaps he could explain why it's so bad of Comet but ok for HP ... ??? Or you could????

Depends on whether HP had/has a licensing/profit sharing agreement with Microsoft...

You forgot to post this part of what Ed Bott says: "2-day or overnight FedEx delivery for another $6 or $12, respectively".

Don't software manufacturers, especially manufacturers of an O/S, frequently overcharge for that software?

I agree, prices are indeed (much) to high. However same manufacturers can legally do and ask for their software whatever they want.

Comet isn't accused of breaking any laws, are they? The initial article is talking about a civil lawsuit, not a criminal case I believe.

I believe that they should be allowed to charge what they wish for the product. However, I also believe that they shouldn't force me to buy the product if I don't want it.

That's where the market in North America is screwed up. I have paid for several m$ licenses that I don't use because there was no way to avoid the Windows Tax. The only time I was able to avoid it was when I ordered a nettop direct from China (by the way, it's running a GNU/Linux distribution and it's never had any pirated software installed) that came with a GNU/Linux distribution pre-installed from the manufacturer, but the same make/model is only available with Windows here.

For those of you telling me to build my own or order from a place like System76.. I like small energy footprint devices like laptops, netbooks and nettops, which means OEM. I also like to try out the laptop to see if I like the keyboard feel, layout and the screen coating for example. I live in Canada.

I didn't forget. I listed it separately, as did he, and you quoted it. Anything else you'd like to set me straight on?
