 | [Cable] Toronto Outage Check-ins So we all know Toronto is experiencing an outage, Rogers DHCP screw up again.
Lets see if we can localize it.
I'm out since 3 am this morning, still out.

 | Yonge & Maitland and you're fine.....okay seriously does Rogers just pick and choose which IP addresses to route to the new equipment? |
|
 | reply to GreatSource Bathurst & St Clair, no downtime in the last week. Now I'm all nervous. A bit south of the library. |

For the record, there are two very different DHCP issues happening. The one most talked about is regarding Teksavvy internet IP addresses becoming exhausted in certain localized areas do to Rogers mismanagement while performing node splits. The other is less talked about.
When your modem syncs with Rogers CMTS, it does its own DHCP with the server, and then downloads a configuration file. This DHCP step seems to be failing lately as well. On the DCM425 it is characterized by the modem getting stuck at the three lights blinking phase. For other modem models, you can identify the same problem in the modem logs with a message like "DHCP FAILED - Discover sent, no offer received." This second type of DHCP problem may be associated with newly provisioned equipment. Like, a brand new activation, or an account that has only been working for a few days.
Probably best if people reporting problems can be more specific.. Like, "all perfect except no internet IP address", or "modem stuck part way through synchronization". |

 | reply to Window Mine is all perfect except it cannot obtain an IP address.
All this seems extremely like anti-competitive behaviour on Rogers part. |

 | reply to Window Queen St E and Pape; same as others, 2 upstream channels, no IP. |

All this seems extremely like anti-competitive behaviour on Rogers part. No, not at all, it's purely accidental, some engineers head will roll, in the new year, when we fix the problem. Christmas is here, no work gets done in the next week.
But hey if you want to come over to Rogers, we don't have the same problems those IISP's do. -- It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas. What do you say, is it the new Bluesmobile or what? |

 | How is it purely accidental when it is consistently happening every upgrade? YOu would think they would STOP upgrades, fix the issue, then continue.
The fact they didn't just says they don't care and want to continue causing issues for the TP services and continue with Anti-Competitive behaviour. |

Cant stop upgrades. No point. You would have your group trying to stop it because of DHCP issues and others who want the nodes split so they can actually use the net.Besides they can both be done at same time as long as the idiot running the show knows what steps to take.So far he has a big 0 thou |

They are just burgeoning through will little thought to the effect they are having on other customers.
The last thing I want or need is to be out internet for the month that it seems them to take to fix it. |

 | King and Parliament, down since 2:40 am. I'm sitting in my apartment's lobby using someone else's signal. |

But if they just fixed DHCP and not the overloaded node you would probably complain about that once the DHCP was fixed. Its a no win situation |

It hasn't affected me all that much. This does so in a much larger way. With the completely random smattering of people that are out this is just gross incompetence. |

I'm guessing Rogers does not see that problem for themselves since their own per-POI/CMTS IP pools might be deep enough to handle the shuffles without problems. If that's the case, TPIA ISPs are going to have a hard time getting that from Rogers without Rogers wanting to pass the costs for it. |
