Re: [CenturyTel] 'speed outage' in northern North Carolina (Oran

How are you determining that your routes are going through RM? most information about ip address geo location aren't very accurate that i've seen.

from Tarboro, NC (east of RM) to google.com

The hostnames of the routers: bb-rcmtncxa-jx9-02-ae0.core.centurytel.net [208.110.248.66]

I don't know what the bb- is, or the xa, but rcmtnc is Rocky Mount, NC.

bb-asbnvacy-jx9-02-ae3.0.core.centurytel.net [208.110.248.170]

asbnva is Ashburn, VA.

Some companies are more clear than others: te9-3-0d0.cir1.ashburn-va.us.xo.net [216.156.116.29]

It seems to be a loose naming convention for backbone routers across networks.

te0-2-0-0.ccr22.dca01.atlas.cogentco.com

That one appears to be in Washington D.C. since it's only a few hops from the Ashburn XO router, with no discernible increase in latency.

Good catch. I didn't notice how obvious that was. Here is a tracert from my home connection:

Trace complete.
Interesting how my 4th hop isn't very descriptive and then it is Ashburn, VA

Now that is is in the evening hours like everyone seems to have issues, i'm going to rerun my speed tests and report back.
