How to join Team Discovery - step by step

All of us who participate in this extremely valuable and rewarding effort to find a cure for Cancer are very pleased that you've decided to join us.

The instructions below should help you through the process. It isn't difficult, but like many other computer-related tasks, following these steps may make it easier. .

•First, point your browser to Grid and on that page, click on "download now" button.

•Note that currently, you can choose programs for Windows 98, ME, 2000, NT, and XP, and there is no program for MAC or *NIX.

•Choose where you would like to store the file on your system, and finish downloading.

•Next, locate the file that you downloaded on your system. It will be named ud_agent_setup.exe. Double click on the file, and follow the directions. This will install the UD Agent, normally in the Program Files -> United Devices folder.

•After the program has installed, you will see a window like this:

The check box at the top should be empty; you will use this when you install the program on additional computers. Select a Member Name (You should probably try your DSLR member name) and a password. Then choose a name for your device. A good suggestion here is the name of your computer, if any. Use anything you like. Then click on "Login", and the Agent will go on line, register your system, download its first work unit (WU), and start processing.

Note: The Member Name and Password you select here will be needed when you access the UD Server to see your stats, or to make changes to your profile. Make sure to record them where you can locate them.

•When this has happened, you will see a new window on your screen like this:

This is the main window of the Agent, and you will see a progress bar at the lower-left, which will advance as the work unit is processed. Also note the words "Primary task is executing" at the bottom. Several other fields will be blank, until the first work unit has been completed and uploaded to the UD Servers.

•Along the lower-right there are six buttons. Clicking on the "I" will bring up this screen:

This is the LIGANDFIT screen, which is the actual Work Unit processor. Here you will see, after a short time, a graphic display of the protein that is being processed, and an incremental number that indicates progress on each molecule of the work. The last two numbers will gain new meaning as you become more familiar. You may also see the information in the lower-left progressing rapidly - but it may not always display.

•Returning to the buttons, clicking on the "home" button will return to the first window. The "moon" button will cause the Agent/Think programs to "Snooze", for the default five minutes or a value you can set. You can use this to temporarily halt processing, for example to use a defrag utility, but NOT while rebooting. The last button, a down arrow, will minimize the screen to your tray, where it should normally be, running in the background. The button with the checkmark brings up an options screen. The remaining button is for help topics.

The two graphic displays on this screen are a representation of the protein that is being processed, and its name, and a representation of the various conformations that are being attempted during processing. The latter will change frequently, and can be interesting to watch. Also visible in the example screen, upper right, is a "HITS" display. You will often see this as a topic in the forum threads, and there is a good explanation in the FAQ regarding hits.

•When the processing has completed, the results will be uploaded to the UD Server. At this time, the window will revert to the first screen above, and you will see "Preparing to send results to UD Server" at the bottom of the screen. There will be a delay before this actually happens.
If you have an "always on" connection, the Agent will automatically send the results in, and very quickly download a new work unit, which it will begin processing.

CONGRATULATIONS! You've earned your first points, and finished your first WU. You will now see new entries in the previously empty fields, and these will continue to change as more work is completed.

•If you want to stop the Agent, for example to reboot your computer, it is important to know that there is a procedure you can follow to avoid losing some of your work.
Briefly, you can look at a file named tkst.ud in your United Devices folder, and note the time the file was last updated. If it is within a few minutes of the present time, you can safely stop the agent by right-clicking on the blue "pill" in your tray, and selecting "exit".
There is a more detailed explanation of this in the FAQ.

•Next step: JOIN TEAM DISCOVERY! Do that by going HERE and clicking on this image:

This will hopefully get you started with no problems. Please remember to check out the FAQ to find answers to any other questions that come up, and to learn more about your contribution to this very important work. And feel free to ask in the forum if you can't find the information you seek.

Now, CRUNCH ON!

It's already there ...
Ian included the thread in the "Two easy steps to join" link already. This way, every thing is in one link.

That was the intent of writing it, BTW.
