[Rant] Sites that keep killing their design and functionality!

I can't fucking stand it anymore! Machines that are otherwise fine for everything non flash heavy ca no longer be used for even basic tasks these days! Got an old 800Mhz G4 1.5Gb ram and a Geforce 6200 AGP flashed to work in it, should be able to use Google Images right? Wrong, the new scripted to death layout takes around 90 seconds per thumbnail to render and brings the entire machine to a standstill using Safari or Firefox, using Cooloris in FF works better, but is still quite slow. I getting the same with late P3, early AthlonXP and P4 hardware as well.

Newegg's site, they completely gutted a perfect site leaving us with this ugly mutant version that is less reliable to search, power search misses half the items and has reduced the number of comparable items to only 5... Lets not forget them playing with the listings to make it look like items after rebate are cheaper to buy outright. Not like we get the rebates from half of the companies... The canadian site doesn't do that crap.

Youtube, mauling the comments section, making it all run together with no separation, yeah, 90% of the comments are trolls or fucktards, but thats not the point...

So what sites have ruined their layouts and or functionality for you?

I don't know about the other sites but am hating the new google images also. If there was another search engine that can conveniently let someone find images I certainly would be happy for someone to post it!

I like the new google images. More thumbnails in a condensed space, and less than 5 sec to load on a 2560x1600 screen.

On what hardware though? I and many others are able to survive on "obsolete" hardware for quite some time, but now it's becoming a struggle to get by with older gear. I refurb allot of machines, it looks like soon I'll be throwing out more and more otherwise perfectly fine hardware just cause some asshat decided he needed to rework his website to justify his existence by using the slowest method possible.

Sure, my X2 and Core2 gear runs it fine, but what about the people who don't need to upgrade for any other reason?

I don't care for the new Google Images, either. Overcomplicated. The results are nice, but I don't like how they handle it when you click on an image. It puts it in a lightbox over the original website, and if I want to dismiss the image and see it in context, it has to reload the whole page? Don't like it.

ITS HORRIBLE!

As a webmaster myself, I often am WTF'n at these sites and the "lets try to be hip" changes they make.. I prefer function over flash and the old school "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"

Please.. STOP the madness.

Oh yeah, for you javascript fans that INSIST you run javascripts to even load your page, please learn what means and ALWAYS plan for fallback so the couple of us who don't randomly load unknown JS can see your sites.

P.S. I agree with the newegg, Google images, and YT comments (as well as the rest of the new YT layout) comments above.. NEW != Better

especially as related to ios download cart, removal of secured ftp access to images, no "non-java" download option until a major fit was raised, etc.

Those machines are very old and yet you expect them to still run well?

It's those people problem. Dual core been out for a while now, no point in keeping old design of your website just for those that refuse to upgrade.

See: newegg.com product detail pages. The old page was concise and you could view everything on one page with minimal scrolling. The new look throws that away with all this useless Web 2.0 whitespace and forces you to scroll for 5 hours and click on 30 tabs to view the same data. I've contacted them about it and they don't care.

I fully agree with you OP. I remember all the frustration and anger I experienced when I knew my Athlon XP machine was just getting too old for websites that went unnecessarily crazy with flash and javascript; If I didn't have adblock plus enabled, many sites like Youtube were a pain to use. Now that I've made that machine a guest PC, I get complaints about it being "too slow" for some websites; I still blame Flash. 10.1 is terrible on my 5 year old laptop; I'm still running version 10 until the guys will actually listen to my complaints on the forums. (Yay for security risks)

Old machines still have life in them.. mainly in the form of file servers, but install some flash disabling add-ons for FF or whatever browser you're using and you're good to go. Still seems ridiculous though... and then you lose some functionality.

Technological advancements are great, but remember that not everyone has spare cash in their wallet. $200 you say for a modern computer? Wait.. $150? I don't care if I can get a decent computer for under $100, users with older machines should be given options to use a LQ version of a website and not be stuck with something that brings their PC to a screeching halt just because someone had too much fun in flash one night.

Ditto on Google Images. I hate it. It's like trying to lasso a snake on LSD.

It'll never happen because it's the designers and coders that make the decision on if it's shit or not!

Easy to say but with my wife sick and not working, we have to cut back on wants. I haven't been able to upgrade my computer in years. Hell, my TV is almost 10 yrs old too while you are at it. So its not always a choice about not upgrading. Its simply a lack of money.

Oh well after next year all my bills and loans but my house will be paid off so I can start putting money back for a new machine.

I agree the download cart is worthless, most of the rest of the site is too. Why do I have to click through 3-4 pages before I can download the image I've already found? The search feature is the worst I've ever seen.
