Re: Port 80 open after setting up my NAT to open for Xbox live

If you have port forwarded 80 to the IP of the XBOX on your router, GRC will probably always show the port as open. Close all ports and retest. The port is forwarded on the router which is what GRC sees, so imho it would not matter if the xbox is on or off. Yes, you will have to live with the fact that anybody can try to contact your Xbox. Not quite sure what they can do though.

What Dude11 is trying to say is that with some routers you can have an additional firewall with firewall rules that allow one to say yes I am opening up port 80, but only to a specific IP address and perhaps only for a certain time period and the packets being sent are properly formatted.

A normal consumer router basically uses NAT as a type of firewall like protection, but security via NAT is a byproduct not a main purpose.

If I disable the Xbox ports in my router I'm all stealth. I turned it off last night to play it safe. I just don't want to open up my PC to malware because my kids would prefer the NAT to be open for a better gaming experience.

My router is a Linksys WRT54GL and I used that in conjunction with the Windows 7 firewall.

No need to disable for fear of you PC as the port is forwarded to the XBOX. I do not own one, so not sure how the XBOX is setup to your LAN. If there is communication with LAN devices, other that traffic to and for the router, (not isolated), I would be concerned.

You aren't. And won't. I've never heard of someone hacking a home network via an XBOX that's open to the internet. I've never even heard of someone remotely hacking an untouched XBOX (mods may be a different story, but I doubt you've modded your XBOX)

I have my 360 on my home network, and it is set as the DMZ. I just leave a rule in my firewall to allow the ports in and open and don't give it a second thought.

In theory, when you shut off the XBOX, the port will close, anyway.

You could also enable UPnP on your router, and the XBOX will open and close ports as needed.

I have UPnP disabled on my router. And our Xbox is not modded in any way.

I'm just concerned about the fact that port shows up as open when the Xbox is not being used but connected to power.

Isn't a DMZ more risky? Also how do you go about setting up my Xbox like that?

#1 Go to Games & Apps -> DMZ

#2 DMZ the IP Address of the Xbox.
