Re: Liquid Drain openers

I just got my bathroom sink clog cleared. I used various liquid/gel drain openers along with boiling water. It worked for a few weeks then it would clog again. Bought a snake and tried to pull out the clog but couldn't, only pushed in more and then it seemed to give, maybe got into the larger main or broke it up.

On a funny note years ago a friend was trying to unclog his brothers toilet using some kind of air pump gun. Directions said to pump 4 times then release (supposed to shoot air bubble to clear clog) Well he did that a few times and still nothing. Then he pumped it oh maybe 10 or more times to build up the pressure more. When he pulled the trigger it sounded like a bomb went off when the toilet blew up into lots of pieces, water everywhere. I was standing in the door way and just got a little wet, he took some shrapnel to his arms and face, thankful he had his face turned to the side so his eyes didn't get it. It was funny as hell though. He called his brother and said he cleared the clog for sure

It is apparently quite easy to inadvertently destroy a toilet when you are trying to clear it. Almost all drain chemicals say they are not to be used in toilets, as it seems the heat they generate can cause the cold porcelain to crack.

When my child was younger and we flushed a lot of wipes (I know, we probably shouldn't have been doing that), I frequently had to plunge a lot of toilet clogs. Then I read where soap or detergent mixed in before plunging makes things go quicker, and it does seem to help a lot. But eventually I bought a cheap toilet auger, and after one or two uses the problem all but went away. Even that simple hand auger had cautions about damaging the toilet, though.

Yep it was something just like that. Pump it up or say 10- 20 times and BOOM

I know someone who had a clogged kitchen sink drain and used one of those air things (I think it was more like an aerosol can). All it did was move the clog further down the line. In particular, it moved the clog past the tie-in for the dishwasher drain, which resulted in the sink full of water draining into the dishwasher and overflowing onto the floor.
