[360] Brand new 360 Owner, couple of questions

Hi,

Just got a new Elite and got it set up yesterday. I haven't had any chance to play any games on it. I have a couple of questions.

1. What kind of noises should it make? When mine is turned on, it sort of makes a humming noise. Noises are kind of hard to describe, but this is a loudish, hum. It's louder than I expected, but not as loud as my original XBox. But it's a different sound than my PS3. My PS3 just sounds like a big fan. Not a hum. XBox is more of a humming. Is this normal, or should I be thinking about returning it?

2. The date on mine is 11/23/2009. I was wondering if there were any build improvements that occurred after this date? I got one of the ones with the two free games (Lego Batman and some other game). But they had newer boxes in the store that didn't have the games. If there were any improvements made to the console, I'd rather have that then a couple of free games.

3. I keep reading about RROD. Is that still a danger for the newer Elite consoles?

Thanks.

1. The noise is normal.

2. Not sure if they have released a newer built since the end of November.

3. RROD is possible in any console. I still do not believe they have a solid fix for it. The RROD is covered for 3 years so just register your console on xbox.com and get to gaming.

By newer, you mean newer than 11/2009?

Keep the 360 with some open air around it

Noise is normal....even with the fan going up after awhile

Clean it every few weeks, imo, for dust

Install the games to your harddrive, less noise that way.

Except Halo 3...don't install that to the hard drive since it'll degrade performance, but everything else have at it!

Happen to have a link handy for that?

Less noise but the fan is still used and I have read some stories about how internally it is still working hard

No link needed. It's built into the system software. Put a game disc in and I think it's the Y or X button to install to hard drive.

I hardly ever use it, so I must never have seen the instructions. Next time my kids get on it, I'll have to look.

Thanks.

NP. They added that feature when the new dash update came along. Most games take up around 5GB of space on average.

That sounds good. I've got a 250GB HD, and the kids only seem to like to play one or two different games. So, space won't be an issue until they finally get tired of whatever it is that they play.

It's too bad the original still has to be placed in the drive. But, I suppose there's no other way to verify ownership or multiple use.

As long as it sounds like a jet taking off from an aircraft carrier and while your in the dashboard with your Xbox standing up and it vibrates everything off the table its on including itself its working great.

I am not talking bad about the console I am joking but it does do this but I have had mine 2 years and it works better now then when I bought it I think.A little advise and I have checked it with a infrared thermometer because i do heating/a/c,but if you leave it horizonal it will run hotter because the airflow design was idiotic. Its to close to the table its on and it gets the table/desk hot and keeeps generating heat but if you stand it up and put something under the front and back edges about an inch high it will run 6 degrees cooler trust me it works.the console sits to close to the table and for it to suck air freely its a must .Think of it like this you barely crack a window in your car and smoke barely goes out of it but you roll it down and it starts sucking any lose paper in the car out

But standing the 360 vertical can cause it to scratch disc more often. Gamefly even includes a little handout when you sign up reminding you to keep your 360 horizontal. Basically you are screwed either way.

I run my horizontal but I cut two 12" long pieces of 2"x2" wood and stick one under each side of my 360, so the little rubber feet are on top the wood. This gives me 1.5" clearance underneath the 360 and helps keep it cooler.

Generally, that's how I clean out my car...

I know this thread is kind of old but.. Has anyone tried using a Laptop cooler for their consoles?

I haven't, but I'm not sure a laptop cooler would work so well on a 360. The console needs air more than anything to cool itself. A laptop cooler uses the flat bottom of it to radiate the heat out of the system. I guess it might be worth a try...but my guess is you would get about the same results.
