voip.ms notes

I wanted to mention details of this amazing service because it allows the user to have complete control of what comes through his phone. Their prices are on the low side, the voice quality has been excellent, and they are as reliable as any voip outfit I know of.

The voip.ms IVR has been working perfectly along with the callerid routing.

I put into the callerid list every friend and family member I might want to hear from, and if their callerid is recognized, the phone rings.

I have been giving out my voip.ms DID to people I am doing some kind of business with - plumber, welfare case worker, pension people, etc. as 111-222-3333 ext 945. These people are not in the callerid list.

The 945 extension has a time condition associated with it so that the phone rings mon-fri, 10am-4pm. At any other time, the message goes to voicemail.

When people not in the callerid list call, they hear the message that I recorded using my headset and a default sound-recording utility, and that I uploaded to voip.ms. It prompts them to enter a 'valid' extension.
(If you don't have the means of making a recording, you can use a very good text to speech utility at »www.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php.)

If they enter 945, they get through. If they don't know the extension, they are prompted to enter 99 to go to voicemail. If they enter nothing, the call hangs up. The requirement to enter 99 takes care of the especially nasty telemarketers who play a recorded sales pitch even if you do not pick up.

Awesome post - thanks

I have heard rumors that new DID routing features will soon be added, so that we will be able to set separate failover destinations for busy, no answer, and device unreachable. As soon as this works, I am going to set me up a calling queue!

Sounds like your technique would also be good for avoiding calls from annoying family members. Noted.

It sounds like they are not sitting back and taking a break. They are also testing the use of wildcards when you specify a callerid, and I think they are working on putting in a calling card feature like callecentric's, where you get a dial tone to call out with.

You can really tailor the response to a call: Give cousin Joe a
pre-recorded lecture as to why you are not going to loan him any money and then hang up.

Maybe I have a skewed view of this, but it seems to me that a vosp that provides such flexible response to calls has a big advantage over other vosps that do not.

It's not the most important thing for me - reliability and good sound are - but if you have those, then having call routing options - the more the better - is a big selling point.

Just took a look through the websites of several of the more popular vosps, looking for routing options.

callcentric, voipo, voicepulse, viatalk, voip.com all have some kind of inbound routing depending on caller id and maybe other criteria - I didn't feel like making a thorough investigation.

So it seems it is not difficult to find a vosp that does some screening of incoming calls to at least whitelist or blacklist.

What none of them has, as far as I could tell, is an ivr, which allows you to interact with the caller. That makes a big difference in the flexibility of the routing.

We now support wildcards on CallerID Filtering/Routing.

Examples:
214XXXXXXX
214XXX1234
214555*
214*
etc..

Excellent, thanks. It cuts in half my filter list of caller ids.

Awesome! Toll-free numbers are now routed directly to Voicemail

Edit: And it looks like you can now see a list of available DIDs. These guys just keep getting better and better!

It is very nice indeed.

Voip.MS has perhaps the best lookup tools for DID's.

However, it's not new. Been there for at least several months, both for local US numbers and for tollfree.

(Maybe it's new for Canada numbers ?)
