 Transferring 8MM movies to DVD

Does anyone have any suggestions for services or equipment to transfer old 8MM movies to electronic format, ultimately to DVD?

I have a friend who has dozens of old family home movies (without sound) that he wants to transfer, but the cost at the local camera shop is quite high.

Any tips on equipment and/or personal experiences with services is appreciated.

Camcorder aimed at screen, play and record then dump off to hard drive from camcorder[not elegant but would work and is cheap if hes got a recent camcorder]
-
what outputs does the camera that filmed them have?

"Old 8mm"=film.
The camera wouldn't have any 'outputs'.

Camcorder aimed at screen, play and record ...
This would likely result in unacceptable video, as the frame rate of the film is not synchronized to the frame rate of the camcorder, causing pull-down bars to roll thru the frame continuously, and nasty flicker. Thats probably why the professional transfer is expensive: synchronization.

A place like this would probably be your best bet...

We'll try that again. FILM, not 8mm video tape. Kodachrome. Only "output" is where you take the exposed film out and take it to the drug store to get developed.

This is the stuff I'm talking about..I've got more than I care to admit.
Yeah, I think the link Howie provided above may be the best bet (or a similar site)...they look like a reputable company and the prices aren't too bad either.

This thread got me thinking about some old 8mm "movies" I have too, that I've been meaning to do something with.

Sadly, my OLD 8MM projector is long gone (I even thought of looking on eBay to buy an old one, just to see the movies again), but this looks like a better option.

And yes, I'm talking FILM here, not 8mm tapes. (I know, I'm really showing my age now...along with the rest of you who know what I'm talking about).

I helped a friend build a home-brew telecine machine about 5 years ago. We used the info found at sites like this one: »www.movie2video.com/ and converted an old 8mm projector.
It worked surprisingly well, and didn't cost a lot.
Just Google "home telecine" and you'll get a lot of results.

Homebrew Telecine

Amazing how things have changed since I last messed around with a converted movie projector!
This guy's blog:

Is an amazing study in how to build a homebrew telecine if you're so inclined.
I might just start looking for an old projector on eBay, as I have a LOT of friends with 8mm and Super8 films laying around.

Re: Transferring 8MM movies to DVD

Some nice info there drjim!
Now, all I need is an old projector!

Heh...in my searching, some of the old 8mm projectors sure brought back memories.

(Edit) We posted at the same time...I actually saw that link while I was looking around...thanks again.
Not that I may really try this, but you just never know.

Has anybody done any cleaning of 8mm film here? I've got some that's been stored in those small mailer boxes that appears to have some mold on the film. Other film on steel reels in steel tins look clean.

I'd entrust that to a professional specially if its content you don't want to risk losing.
