[TWC] Upstream Power is +56.5 dBmV, please help.

This is my first post and it's rather long and perhaps a bit confusing but after all the trouble shooting that's been attempted I don't know what else to do to fix this problem. I'm attempting to be as thorough as possible, bear with me and thanks in advance for taking the time to read this. Hopefully someone out there can help.

I've had this ongoing issue for the past YEAR, I notice it while I'm playing World of Warcraft. I'll be connected to the game and have Ventrillo running as well. I'll loose connection to both, Vent will reconnect me within 2-3 seconds and WoW sends me back to the log-in screen saying "you have been disconnected from the server".

Several months ago a technician came out here, changed out the 3-way splitter in my house (it's in the garage and cable hookups are in the living room and the 2 bedrooms, master bedroom never had cable because we have the modem there with no splitter) cut away corroded cable and the signal was so great that he felt it was more than OK put a splitter in the room where the modem was so that you can actually have cable tv in there! Everything ran great for several months, now the problem is back again.

When I had no issues, I'm playing WoW while connected to Vent. AOL is running in the background, YouTube video will be playing, all with no problems or disconnects. Then at times, the disconnects are much more frequent, every so many minutes and always on WoW and Vent, I close out everything, disconnect myself from the router and connect directly to my modem (making sure I reset the modem and restart my computer) and the problem and disconnects get even worse.

This week alone I've had 2 technicians come to service my internet. The 1st one did absolutely nothing but look at the levels and suggest I connect directly to my modem without using the router (mind you, I'm aware of bandwith being reduced by other computers/devices but while I game the only thing running is the one computer I'm on which is connected with a CAT6 50ft ethernet cable). So the disconnects continued and got even worse. I made another call to Time Warner.

2nd technician checked the levels outside, they're at +47 and that's before they hit the 3-way splitter in the garage. Then hits another splitter in the room, hits the modem, hits the router and I end up with an awesome +56.5, he removed the splitter and I requested he change out my modem as well.

This is what my current modem information is, I'm well aware (thanks to these forums) that my "Retun Signal" levels should be within +35 to +52 dBmV.

I was unhappy with the end result, I complained that my levels were still way too high. A service order was made and they were supposed to be out here today working on the lines. Open day appointment they had said, I called at 4pm to confirm after I checked my levels and they were the same as the day before. They told me I probably wouldn't be contacted regarding this particular appointment and that they have yet to come out here. I asked about being put through with customer service given that I was considering scrapping the digital phone service if Time Warner could not lower my "return signal" levels . The CS representative asked me how I knew my levels and who had provided me with all this information. I felt like some secret operation spy who had just given themselves away. I simply explained that I was aware my levels were too high and it was making my connection unstable. She proceeded to ask me if my telephone line on the modem was connected to the #1 or #2 jack. I told her it was connected to the #1 jack and did that have anything to do with any kind of interference/disconnects I was experiencing. She said, "could be". I was told to expect a call within 30minutes to know more about my appointment. I received no such call, although I did get a call within 5-minutes of hanging up to take a survey regarding how I would rate their customer service on that last call! Ugh, my response was not so pretty.

I apologize for the long post/rant but I really can't seem to sort this one out and the information I have really doesn't add up or make sense. All I understand is this:
*Played on a laptop, wireless using LinksysWRT150N router, no digital phone and no connectivity issues and or disconnects.

*Playing on a desktop, wired using LinksysWRT150N router with a 50ft CAT6 cable (no other devices running in the house using bandwith) have a different modem since we have digital phone and experience alot of connectivity issues and disconnects. The problems are worse when I connect my computer directly to the modem itself.

To make this post worse I might as well add my system information for those who know and might think my computer may be the culprit. My computer is pretty clean, the fans and heat sink are pristine, my video card has the latest drivers and my settings are set to the minimum requirements to getting me 30-45 fps in the cities and 54-60fps in other areas. I've been told to get a different router and change out my anti-virus while I game but with these internet signal levels I think I would just be wasting my money and I should hold off until I can get my internet problem resolved. Inc computer SPAM, so sorry, and thanks again to anyone who can enlighten me on the issue.

Hi,

First off, your ethernet cables make no difference in the readings you see at the modem. I have a 100 ft cable from my modem to the linux router and it's Cat-5e - not even Cat-6. But it doesn't matter - the readings you see on your modem have to do with the signal levels from the RG-58 (I think it's RG-58 - but you know what I mean) to the cable companies equipment. It will fluctuate a few points in either direction depending on the weather, heat, etc. outside.

That being said: check out my thread and how I solved my problem:

»SNR readings & Motorola SB5100

The device I used was this:

But, I didn't connect the power cable to it because I wasn't having problems with too little power - but too much. Unfortunately, it didn't have much effect on my upstream power levels but totally corrected my massive downstream power level problem. Unfortunately, only your cable provider can give you your SNR readings for the upstream, but your power level is still within spec. I agree, though - it's too high even though it is within spec. If you don't want to try something like the equipment I posted above, go to Radio Shack and purchase a few splitters and keep splitting until you get some lower power levels (in regards to the RG-58 cabling - like I said above - your ethernet/usb/etc. have nothing to do with those readings).

If splitting doesn't help - you'll just have to keep opening up tickets.

If I'm completely off my rocker, I'm sure someone will correct me - but from my own thread - I was able to correct my problems without getting Time Warner involved.

Hope you get it solved, man!

- Marco

Thanks for the reply, I read the post but now I feel a bit lost...

So you're recommending I add more splitters? I thought my weak signals was the reason they removed the one splitter from the room. If you don't mind telling me a bit more, I'd like to hear it.

If you add splitters you will lose power on the downstream but you will also lose power on the upstream. Since your downstream power levels are well within spec (-2.3 is great!) and your upstream power levels are completely too hot, adding splitters will decrease your upstream power levels (which is what you want)... you can stand to lose some on your downstream because your levels are so good.

But like the guy in my thread noted - there is no way to fix one without affecting the other. Only Time Warner can do that. But, if you can use good splitters and good cables - and it doesn't affect your SNR too much - you could find a balance like I did.

Unfortunately, there is no way for you to know what your SNR is for your upstream. If you find adding the splitters makes your downstream SNR go below spec - then you'll just have to call Time Warner.

So, quick recap.

Add a splitter. You should see your power levels for both your downstream and upstream change - at least for me it did on my thread. If your upstream power levels go down to an acceptable margin without pushing your downstream power levels too far out of whack - and your SNR stays within spec - you could possibly find what you are ultimately looking for.

I think that's how it works - at least for me it did. I do know that adding the splitters made a big difference on the downstream power levels for me - I'm just not sure how much it affects your upstream - and the fact you can't see your SNR for the upstream either.

It can't hurt to try... if it solves your problems then awesome... if it doesn't - it's one more thing ruled out when you call Time Warner.

Sorry, but I must disagree. Adding more splitters will only INCREASE the upstream power, which is already too high. The solution is to decrease the number of splitters between where the cable enters the house and the modem's input (ideally, you only want one splitter in the path here).

If the upstream remains above 50 dBmv with only one splitter in the signal path, a tech will need to come out.

Just wanted to comment on the upstream power level. I have one splitter and our upstream stays at 52 dBmv. Least that is what the SB5101 says. No problems with the broadband connection.

I know surfboard modems can handle things little better. I included a screenshot of my upstream power level.

Daveinpoway,

Why did adding splitters decrease my downstream power levels?

Or is that how it works? Downstream power levels decrease and upstream power levels increase when it pertains to splitters?

Thanks for correcting me!

That's right- if you add attenuation (from a splitter or any other method) to your line, the downstream power will decrease and the upstream power will increase.

Get one of these

MUST BE a bidirectional amplifier (active return). They come in 2-4-8 ports too eliminating the need for splitters.

There are other brands but beware the stuff you buy at radioshack is junk so make sure you buy professional grade bidirectional amplifiers.

Please note that the following link is for a passive return (no upstream amplification)
»cgi.ebay.com/PCT-cable-amp-ampli···1|294:50

I've seen new PCT 4 ports active return amplifiers at ebay listed for around $50.

My home in McAllen has the 8 port version with each output going to a different room. I have no splitters here.

Are today's readings, when both technicians were out here this week I inquired about splitters (which they recommended we remove) filters (some had never heard of), and amplifiers. Which I got mixed responses. I was told the amplifiers would only affect my channel signals and NOT my internet. I really wish these technicians would have their infomation together. So overall with the information I've provided I need an amplifier? Will this replace that 3-way splitter in my garage?

I've had high upstream problems before. Mine use to fluctuate from 50 dbmv to 61 dbmv.

If possible try running the modem from the 1st splitter on the end with less signal loss. Check if all coax cables are in good condition and make sure they are rg6.

I had a disconnecting problem and it was solved from replacing a rg58 or rg59 (i forget) with a rg6 coax cable.
Have you also tried exchanging your modem? just in case.

As for the amplifier, i tried that before also...i bought mine from Best Buy and it was made for cable tv and cable modems. It solved my problem for a little while, but ended up with issues later. Up to you to try it or not.

But my best bet is to try run the modem from the 1st split, check the condition of the cable. Also keep on calling Time Warner everyday and talk to the foreman until the issue is fixed. Thats what i did and they responded pretty quick cuz i think they were annoyed from me calling everyday.

In general, consumer-grade amplifiers are not a good idea for bi-directional (internet and digital set-top boxes) cable services. Worst-case, they can amplify noise on your line and send it out to your neighbors, thus ruining service for many people. If an amplifier is truly needed, it should be a professional-grade one that is supplied, installed and adjusted by your ISP.

Also, in many instances, bi-directional cable amplifiers will only amplify the downstream signal, and will thus not do anything to reduce the upstream power.

I know it has been frustrating for you, but, other than the suggestions about checking your cables and trying a replacement modem, the solution is going to have to come from a TW tech. Only they have the measuring equipment (which costs way too much for you to even think about buying for yourself) to see what is going on plus the experience needed to take the proper action once they make the measurements.

Overall I tried the best to inform myself at the numbers I should be looking at and making sure that my own equipment is as updated as possible. Bottom line it doesn't seem like Time Warner is putting in the effort to fix this issue just yet.

I took some pictures of the 3-way splitter, the modem router ect. Now I'm curious as to the types of cable in my house such as the rg58, rg59 and rg6 as mentioned above. I wasn't able to find any information on the cables I looked at.

That looks like a good installation with RG6 and TWC supplied connectors.

To prove my point I did some test with and without my bidirectional cable amplifier.

Notice the upstream power level with and without the amp (35.5db versus 43.0db) that is a reduction of 7.5db! My AMP's specs claim a gain in upstream of 7-8db well within specs. The same thing for the downstream 10.9db vs 3.8db.

The 3-way splitter appears to have all RG-59 cable attached and none of the connectors have been replaced in years. The 2-way has RG-6 attached, with a new connector.

I suppose the modem is connected to the 2-way, which is connected to the 3-way. So which connector on the 3-way leads to the 2-way? Left, middle, or right?

A high transmit level is often caused by too many splitters in the modem path or a short center conductor on the cable not making full contact.

What are the modem signal levels when the modem is connected BEFORE any splitters?

Well when the tech came out here I asked him to check the signal outside before anything, so +47 outside before the splitter. Hits 3-way splitter then it would hit the 2-way. To modem, router, then my computer and that was the end result, +56.5. I spoke with TWC today, they said they would address the issue no later than Wednesday and that I would have to speak to the technicians about the type of cable being used on my connections. The sad part is that I live in a condominum complex with an HOA.

47 at the demarc, gets you about where you are if your modem is connected through the -7 loss leg of the 3-way split in combination with the -3.5 loss of the 2-way split.

The 59 cable more than likely can't be removed or replaced due to the condo/HOA situation and isn't the problem in this case anyway.

It may be possible for a Plant Maintenance tech to lower the upstream level at the demarc, but then again it may be just right considering the outside cable distribution design.

Your modem should REALLY be connected to the -3.5 leg of either the 3-way or 2-way split, with no more than that 1 split in the line between the demarc and the modem. Doing that would get you about 51 dBmV on the upstream which is just right. 2 or more splits and using the -7 loss leg of the 3-way are both problems.

I'd like to find that information out too. Once they work on the lines I'll have to ticket in to have them come in here with the end result. Would it be a great benefit to have them switch out all my connectors?

How about connecting the line going to your cable modem to the -3.5 instead of the -7? That might help things.

One thing to keep in mind. Regardless of what your signal levels end up being more than one splitter coming to a cable modem can kill your return path. Causing intermittant problems etc. Not sure if it was mentioned in the thread I didn't want to take the time to read through it.
