Those Who Rented A Car From Enterprise

I will be renting a car soon from Enterprise Rent A Car. I will be driving from Maine to Florida and then back during the rental period. On Enterprises reservation pages, it seems all of the various rental centers have restrictions on WHERE I can drive. Such as:

"UNLIMITED MILEAGE EAST OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER AND AS FAR SOUTH AS THE SOUTHERN BORDER OF VIRGINIA AND KENTUCKY. **NO TRAVEL INTO CANADA WITH PCAR OR ABOVE** IF TRAVELING OUTSIDE OF THIS AREA, MILEAGE IS LIMITED TO 150 MILES FREE PER DAY AND .25 PER ADDITIONAL MILE."

If I rent from the airport, the restriction is I can not even leave New England or mileage charges begin.

My question is, do they require you to check in? Do the cars now have GPS that track this information? The last time I rented a car, many years ago, this was never an issue....Are they now able to tell?

GPS/Blackboxes, whatever you want to call them. Some companies charge you more if you were speeding.

They do not require you to check in until the date you told them you would return the car. I don't think Enterprise has GPS inside the works of the cars where you can't detect them, but they might. Anyway, what you're contemplating is a bad idea even in the likely case that they don't. Here's why.

When you rent the car, Enterprise almost always asks where you're going, and they enter that information on your rental form. If you are pulled over by the police and for some traffic infraction, and are outside the area you told Enterprise you were going, the police will see it on your contract (because your copy of the contract is, in effect, your registration). The police may treat you briefly, at least, as if the car was stolen, and Enterprise is likely to find out about it. You will then be in breach of your agreement with Enterprise. Your rental car contract will specify serious financial penalties for this, well in excess of 25 cents per mile. And if you've had an accident in Florida when you told them you were staying in New England, even if the accident wasn't your fault, they will eat you alive financially.

You want to find an unlimited mileage deal. Keep looking.

If you can't find one, New England rental car companies at airports often restrict driving to New England and New York state. If you can get to the mid-Atlantic states, you may be able to rent an unlimited mileage car to Florida and back.

Well had to rent a car this week with them. Not sure about other but the people they have near me are great. I to was restricted to NJ NY CT region. I asked if i could go into PA they asked me where in PA. Was going to the Sands in Bethlehem PA. They said that would be ok. Not that far in PA as it was. If this is a long distance drive then you need to make arrangements ahead of time.

Enterprise sucks. On the rare occasions I rent from them, they still give me the bullshit lines about really needing their supplemental insurance (I don't), and that my Amex doesn't provide rental car coverage (it does). I don't expect much from a rental car, but is it too much to have a full god damned gas tank when I start out?

The car is being paid for (with gift certificates and such)...so I must use Enterprise.

Enterprise must handle the registration thing differently than say, Penske truck rental. When I rented a Penske truck, an actual State Of Maine Vehicle registration and insurance card were in the vehicle.

If you drive out of the area and get in an accident, you will be royally screwed.

I've found that Avis is cheaper than Enterprise. Enterprise's scam is they rate the cars differently. What they call a mid-size, other companies call a compact. So when you compare rates, you're getting a smaller car than you think.

I agree, I've always felt enterprise was a bit of a scam. We used them at work for a long time and every time I'd get a car to go to DC it would have the states listed (or not listed) that would not allow me to go to DC. We always wound up writing it in the agreement.

Here is where it is interesting. If I rent from the airport location and not the stand alone stores, the wording changes to below:

MILEAGE IS UNLIMITED WHEN THE VEHICLE REMAINS IN MA, RI CT, NH, VT AND ME. IF TRAVELLING OUTSIDE OF THESE STATES, MILEAGE IS CHARGED AT 200 MILES FREE PER DAY AND 1000 FREE PER WEEK, $0.25 PER MILE OVERMILEAGE, FOR THE ENTIRE RENTAL.

So I have to believe there is some sort of GPS or "black box" type thing as that would be the only real way to enforce such a rule as above, right? If I dipped into NJ for an hour or two...this would be the only way they would know it. Not to mention, being in Maine...I could drive into canada and back very easily, which they do not allow, the only way they would know is by GPS correct?

You might have issues crossing the border. Customs might ask who owns the car and that little sticker on it would be hard to lie about.

I used to manage a Car Rental office....

Unless they have Gps (Highly Unlikely) they won't know where you go (Or really care) unless your car breaks down, you get a flat tire, a ticket, or in an accident.

If any of those things happen you will be screwed! If you go out of the are and the car breaks down be expected to be abandoned by the company. Plus they will charge you with all kinds of fee's. They will need to bring the car back to them. Will they cover that? No. You will....

These offices are likely franchises and not corporate stores so they are responsible for their own cars so they don't want them all over the country in case something like this does happen!

If you want to risk it go ahead.... I know a guy that was paying $300 month for 10 years to pay for an accident he got into out of out authorized area....

I guess I should ask this way then...Is it likely I will be able to negotiate down to Florida? Has anyone done THAT with Enterprise, or are they really as bad as they seem in my first few impressions of them?

This whole policy seems very antiquated to me.

If they are a Franchisee, I highly doubt they will allow you to go to Florida with their car with unlimited mileages...

Too much of a risk to them.

How long are you tenting the car for?

I have $400 in gift certificates for Enterprise...It will be for at least a week....For the prices stated on the website, with $400, I can get roughly 9 days for $400. I guess if it comes down to it, I could try and sell them and then use the cash towards Hertz. I may stop by there shop soon and see what they can do.

You could always call Enterprise and ask them, it's not like you have to give them full information about you to ask them anything. Who knows, they might be able to work something out to fit your needs.

I can understand wanting to take the risk but why are so many people willing to take the risk option first before even exercising the first logical option?

You do know that while you may be able to use the gift certificates to pay for the vehicle when you return it, they'll still require a credit card and they will do a pre-approval for the entire expected amount on the card.

Oh that is no problem. I am not worried about that.

I use Enterprise quite regulary. I've driven from Milwaukee, Wi to Gearing, Nebraska a few times, thats 1,000 miles each way. And i've done that drive 5 times, each time, round trip was 2 days. So 2,000 miles in 2 days on their cars, they did not care one bit that I put that much mileage on it. So 2,000 miles in 2 days cost me $40 in rental.
