So, I'm going to Cozumel on a cruise with my husband and several of our friends in September. I want to bring back several dozen homeade flour tortillas... My mom is originally from Arizona, and her sisters will sometimes buy and ship them to us, but it's SO expensive to do so!
My question is... Will they let me bring the tortillas back on the ship? We don't have to fly at all, so airline regulations aren't a problem.
Anyone know? Thanks!

Of course, this was pre Swine Flu, so it may be different now. |

Most prepared foods are ok to bring back from Mexico. I would say that tortillas would fit that description. I believe you would not need to pay a duty on your items if they cost $800 or less and you carry them in your personal luggage. |

The last time I was on a cruise ship it was before 9/11 so this may have changed. Getting it on the cruise ship shouldn't be a problem. I doubt that they will check you that closely getting on. If you have trouble anywhere it will be with customs.

Should be ok.
Fresh fruit, plants, veggies and unprepared/unprocessed things are out.
But tortillas you should be fine.
I'd consider taking ziploc plastic bags to transport them, no saying how they are going to wrap them for you.

unrelated to your question...but i just thought i would mention...do you have a passport? i know some people don't think about things like that (raises hand), but i think you have to have a passport for cruise ships now. someone will correct me if i'm wrong... |

I'm actually not kidding... But I'm also not crazy! The cruise is only 4 days, so they will be fine until I get home and can freeze them. Some of them will go to my mom, and some I will keep.
My mom grew up in the southwest in a little border town where she had a lady who always made them for her family. Ever since I was little, she would buy dozens and dozens of them on our annual trips out west to visit family... but since her parents have passed, none of us make it out there often, and it's WAAAAY too expensive to have them shipped. My plan is to bring her back a little taste of home. It's impossible to find the REAL DEAL in SE Louisiana!

Ashburn, VA | If your name on the cruise booking has your married name, then you really should get your passport changed to match. If your booking has your maiden name, then how would they even know your name had changed? |

1 edit | We were told the same, your Legal name must appear on the booking. Also we had to do two return forms, since my wife has her maiden name, but our kids have my last name.
Also I'd like to chime in, they were really coming down on the food. When we took our cruise out of Port Canaveral they were hammering that you couldn't take food in that wasn't pre package and sealed. If they follow the usual cruise procedure they have dogs inspect your bags that you left for them to pick up the night prior to disembarking. IIRC the fines went up as well. |

clubs: | Not anymore, they have "coolers" now,looks like a mini fridge but it isn't. Well at least Disney Cruises. But call ahead to find out, to get one tell them you need to refrigerate medicine, we had to so we got a actual mini fridge in our cabin. |

A word of caution on this... not security related, but storage related.
Fresh, preservative-free flour tortillas can mold VERY easily and quickly, as in a few days after being baked. And ocean liners are in damp environments, obviously, though cabins have AC. But I don't know that you're going to be successful in getting these home without any mold on them. I'm not sure how to best avoid this, but it's a concern. They're probably not expensive down there, though, so it probably won't cost you much to find out. Refrigerating them on the ship may reduce chances for mold but may make them lose their fresh soft feel-- they may go stale in there. Freezing them would work, if you could keep them frozen. Also, transferring them to and from cool dry environments (fridge, freezer, AC'ed room) to tropical and desert temperatures can cause condensation inside the wrapping and lead to mold within a day.
Since you're not flying at all, you must be taking ground transportation back from Cozumel, so I don't see how this can work for you. |

New travel rules went into effect June 1 (2009). You will need to get that updated, and do it right away since there is a backlog delay. The name on your reservation must match the name on your documents exactly.
