 [Equipment] Incoming calls frequently go to Network Availability

Recently I keep having a problem with incoming calls to my Vonage line, and am unable to figure out what the problem is. Multiple times, from any number, when people try to call me the call goes directly to the Network Availability Number listed on my account.

Usually trying again the call will go through, but sometimes it can take several attempts before the call will go through. This happens from any incoming number. All the while outgoing calls / internet connection is fine. It is only on incoming calls that I get a problem.

My network is configured as:

Cable Modem > Router 1 > Router 2 as repeater > Router 3 > VoIP adaptor. Distance from Router 1 to Router 2 is (at a guess) no more than 300 feet. I am unable to connect the VoIP to Router 1 as it is in a different property (don't worry, its above board). The house is less than a year old, no phone company wiring at all, whole house is hard wired for Vonage use. Been using Vonage for at least 3 years, but had no problems until recently.

Is there anything I can try? the problem is sporadic in nature, some days are fine, other days its a nightmare trying to get through.

Do all of your routers provide DHCP? If so, can you turn it off on routers 2 and 3 and just use it with 1? It sounds like your ATA is having double or triple NAT issues that can definitely mess up its ability to stay registered.

DHCP is only enabled on router 1, disabled on both the other routers.

Well, the only reason Vonage would send the call to your alternate number is if it can't see your ATA. That would mean that the SIP registration packets are being dropped.

What kind of router/firewall do you have? Can you log the traffic in and out, or hang a PC running WireShark via a hub (not switch) between your modem and router 1? I suspect that the incoming Vonage registration packets are getting rejected for some reason.

Maybe Vonage could reduce the registration time? IIRC when I used them they'd send registration packets about 2-3 times per minute.

After 1.5 years of having no issues, I too started having calls sent to my network unavailable number. After messing with 2nd level support for a couple of weeks, I asked them to send me a new ATA. Received a new v-portal and issue stopped. The one clue it was a bad ATA was getting a slow dial tone. Picking up the phone, I'd have to wait sometimes a second to hear a dial tone. It should be instantaneous.

Do you, like I have an irritating ingrate child @ home who runs utorrent off the hook unless and until and block 100% of his access to the router? Because if you do your VoIP quality will suffer to the point of complete breakdown.

I did try going through Vonage support, and the last I heard from them was that they wanted me to log times and numbers of the incoming calls that get a problem. I should have just copied and pasted my online logs to them.

Not sure on if I get a delay on the dial tone, but I might try to see if there is next time I call out.

I have a Linkysys WRT54G (x2) and a Buffalo WHR-HP-G54, all routers are running DD-WRT.

What ATA do you have? How old is it?

I can't remember exactly which ATA I have, but it is about 4 years old and is the small D-Link model (VP??) I would need to look when I get home to be certain.
