1 edit | New Router, D-link Or Not D-link?
I've owned the 604, 4100, 4300 and the 4500, and I think Im done with D-link purely because of the wireless performance which is terrible. The 4500 was working pretty good lately, but got the deothentication wireless error after about 4 days in, which completely disconnects wireless.
Anyway, I'm looking for a new router, I see D-link have a new router, 855, but after reading some responses on the beta forums it looks as though it has the same problems as all D-link routers that have been made in the last 5 years or so - wireless errors and full disconnects.
If I don't buy a D-link wireless product what would any of you advise? Linksys, Cisco? I keep hearing decent reports from these, but I really don't want to jump from one to the other if the problems are the same as D-link wireless routers.
Whats the best performing router availible right now, for wired and wireless, but specifically wireless? |

D-Link wouldn't be a good idea at the moment given everything I've read, seen and experienced.
As for alternatives...this is tough. My only suggestion is that you buy the router locally, test it out, really test it out and if it fails to deliver then immediately take it back for a refund. Don't mess around...your local store may hate you but you deserve to get a router that works, is reliable and is supported by people who eat cows vss worshiping them. -- My favorite Broadband Speed Test is at ISPgeeks.com. For every fix in the firmware they break two more things. QA is nonexistent. Buy a nice wireless N access point, gigabit switch, and run pfSense or smoothwall on a spare PC. -- "Did you know that when one little panda pulls on another little panda's underwear, that's sexual harassment? 1 edit | reply to MLGTWISTED Bang for the buck the DIR-685 will be a prototype of what a home router should be like. The internal HDD is really slow process last reported, that's why this device hasn't hit the market yet here. Other than that 266MHz NPU by Ralink is very good the Ralink WNPU is the newest dual 2.4/5GHz but dlink has disabled 5GHz feature. Ralink distance is 1,200 feet. The unit has 128MB of RAM in a home router. Most of the features are excess to what you really need this router to do. None of the other DIR-currently on the market wireless isn't stable enough.
I am currently 3 levels up from the main wireless router and the wireless access point router.
basement - belkin n+ with ralink chips is stronger wireless coverage main floor - dlink dir-655 with athero chips is 6-10% weaker in wireless using as wireless access point even on gig to gig connection link
I only notice that the dir-655 is good if you're in the same room as it or in the radius of the signal it covers. Out side the coverage than it weak. Belkin N+ just with the dual ANT 2T3R feature is stronger and than 3T3R in the DIR-655. Both wireless gear is set to 802.11b/g/n 20/40Hz auto channel, auto channel width wpa2/aes.
So now that Dlink is using Ralink chips wireless should be stable. DIR-605 and DIR-685. |

| reply to MLGTWISTED Dlink needs to earn my trust again. The latest 655 beta firmware's and the inability to downgrade to a more stable version have made me cautious about recommending them.
I switched to the Apple Airport Extreme and it has been very solid but is limited in the amount of control you have over firewall rules. |

They can't fix the problems with the different chip set makers they use Uni-bla and Atheros just now working! Bad move to use different ones for wireless should have stick with the same brand but Atheros not stable. Even it they did that. Ralink works prefect and Realtek Gig Switch Controller with 832KB is very fast and stable. That chip is showing up more in these routers. So let DLINK use Ralink for both NPU and WPU to make life better for us all. |

No they can't fix the problems of the chip set maker but they need to prove they are making better decisions and at least offer a firmware that works with the chipsets they have sold. |

I got a couple of Atheros chip set firmwares that a crap. Beyond the Dlink I don't this was a good idea to use them. |

| reply to MLGTWISTED Hi,
I wish Dlink still made routers like my old 704 (metal case). That thing is still ticking. It was in service for 6years running 24/7 and never a problem.
My setup now is a Trendnet wired router with a Dlink DWL 6000 AP. This has been running (24/7) now for 7months with no problems.
I am old school and stiil beleive in seperate pieces. This way if one piece goes down Iam still running. I always have my two old routers for backup. Dlink 704 and 713, both in metal cases.
They wont do more than 5meg down, But they will keep online till the new parts arrive...

MnR Well I am old school also, but I needed Gig features and the way the market is going you had to buy that with 802.11n wireless. True it's better to buy a gig wired router and then use external gig switch to router gig traffic to gig nodes. Or route Fast Ethernet traffic to Fast Ethernet switch to Fast Ethernet nodes. Then use 802.11b/g/n wireless access point hopefully with gig port. Best way to do it.
Your right if one node fails then you can replace that hardware.
Which Trendnet wired router are you using? I didn't see you had mentioned that? I know they now are selling wired Gig routers. But since I got two Gig wireless N routers they can be used just have to disable wireless feature. Still the way it's setup now with both wireless routers in use to extend the 802.11/b/g/n in 20/40hz is working find with Belkin N+ has better wireless range.
Right now that's in the basement 80% signal strength for Belkin N+ Next floor on top of the basement 68% signal strength for DIR-655
That's 12% difference showing 150/300 and I am on the 3rd floor. |
