cable company goofs up

called the cable company, told them I wanted to keep the existing high speed internet, told them to discontinue the cable tv service. They send out a tech to pick up the box. He says he shut off the cable service.

After he leaves I discover that the service is still on and works not through converter, but through the cable ready tvs still.

2 hours after I call the tech, I call customer service. I tell them that the service is still on for cable. They say it shouldn't be because I am no longer being billed for it and the tech says he downgraded the cable tv off. I tell them cable still on. They tell me to call back tomorrow. That maybe over the weekend it will shut off.

Next day. I call them again. Its still on. They say they will send tech department notification of such and the need for another tech to come by and turn it off.

At present, no calls for any techs at the cable company. They aren't acting on it.

I have done my part. I am not going to chase them. I am not getting billed for it. But the question is if I let the cable stay hooked up at this point and watch it, can I get in legal trouble for letting it still filter through the tvs. Even if they indefintely don't turn it off or act on this. Remember. I went out of my way to tell them to shut it off correctly. What are the legalities here. Hard to determine because it goes a little beyond passive cable theft. pjr

No, it is not theft. "Active" or "Premium" theft means you're hooking up to the neighbor's cable line or using some type of unauthorized equipment. "Passive" theft is using unauthorized services without notifying the provider (for example: you move to a new house and the cable is still hooked up).

You've done your part to notify the provider.

i disagree. its still passive theft. passive theft is just that. you watch it when the cable company made a mistake and left it on. you can easilly unhook it and not watch it.

Something else to consider. Some cable companies will have just basic basic cable that is part of the cable internet package.
