Ethernet ports & functions for Centurytel 327w D90-327w14-06

The ports are marked E1/Uplink, E2, E3, E4(with pc network symbol). I have PC's connected to E1, E3 & E4. When the PC's are off, the modem lights for E3 & E4 are off. But, for E1 the light stays on? I tried connecting a smart switch to E4(with the network symbol), not only would it not let me connect the pc (a Win2K pc), but I had to reconfigure the pc after I removed the switch and connected the patch cord again. I'm beginning to suspect that E1 & E4 have special functions. I asked a buddy to hook up my switch to his network to be sure it is functioning, if it is I'm going to try connecting the switch to E3 and see if it works on my setup. Does anyone know if E1 & E4 have special functions and is there a special port to connect switches to? And why does the E1 light stay on? Thanks in advance for your help.

In some versions of the 327w firmware, the E1 port can be switched to a WAN port, disabling the DSL modem functionality. See this FAQ
»Westell Equipment Forum FAQ »Guide to Using 327w as a router for Comcast
for details.

There's a question here about what you mean by "the PC's are off." For many recent PCs, when you shutdown the ethernet card remains active. You have to pull the power plug to really turn everything off. The E1 line should go off if you unplug the ethernet cable from that port, at least assuming the modem is in normal DSL modem mode. I'm not sure what happens if you switch E1 to a WAN uplink port.

Welcome to the site, ggerbs.

We do have a CenturyTel Forum here. If you would like me to move your post over to there, I can do that. Let me know.
