Site visitor info?

Hey guys,

Is there any way to find out the IP addresses of people visiting your website?

My (soon to be) website will be hosted on my Comcast space and I bought the domain from Name.com. There is someone in my past who likes to cause me nothing but trouble and I'm hoping there's a way to track the IPs of people viewing my website so I can know if this person has visited and is ramping up to cause more trouble?

I'd also like have a counter, but not one visible to the visitor. How would I code this?

Thanks

I know with most paid hosting accounts, that use CPanel, you have stats programs that are installed. One I like is Awstats...this tells you everything. I dont know how Comcast sets up there webspace, but you may not be able to install any stat programs for your site. When I last used ISP hosting years ago, it was pretty restrictive on what you could do with it. Have you considered paid hosting for around 5 bucks a month? With this you would be able to ban people from seeing your site by IP address as well, once you get it from your stats program.

As the other poster pointed out it would also depend on what tools Comcast makes available to you. Also, you could get a hosting package from another provider that uses a graphical user face such as cPanel, directadmin, plesk etc.

As for blocking an IP address that would not necessarily be the perfect remedy since most end users have a dynamic based service. Therefore, they would simply pull new IPS from their ISP’s DHCP pool. The renewal of IPS could happen daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, etc. depending on how everything is setup on the ISPs side.

You could always block the entire subnet but you might be blocking a mass of valid visitors.

Hey SW, remember me?

..if you build your site on a CMS like Drupal or Joomla, or even WordPress you can install stats modules that will give you IP's.

I am from Canada so I'm not sure how it works over in the states but does Comcast enable PHP scripting or support on free hosting accounts? Or are you getting a paid hosting service from Comcast?

With ISP hosting that I used a bit ago (Adelphia)...you could not uplod any PHP scripts let alone have any SQL usage and such...All of which CMS rely heavily on. Really all depends on Comcasts implementation.

yah..
SW - you might want to invest $3-$7/mo for a cheap host that will let you do whatever you want.. if not, you'll be limited to what comcast decides to let you do in their infinite wisdom..

Hey Swintec,

Exactly what I was trying to put emphasis on. It's exactly that, the CMS requires PHP and SQL functionality.

Do some research and find a host that you will think is most suitable for you and your site.

Good luck!

I do not know of anything that will do it for free on another site, outside of the host.

We use webalizer/awstats.

Instead of using Comcast, you might want to consider using Google Sites. You could then use another Google service, Google Analytics, and get all kinds of information about your visitors.

Yeah, google analytic is a pretty good analytic tool as well.

I do have GoogleApps as part of buying the domain through Name.com. I'll have to see if I can use analytic with Comcast

you just have to add the little bit of code to the body of each of your pages, very simple. Do not think you'd have to ask comcast anything ^_^.
