Console client instructions for onDvine

onDvine See Profile, I think we need to scrap what's on your machine and go with an install of the no-nonsense console version. I am going to walk you through the process, ok? Bear with me.

First step: We need to get every copy of the systray client off your machine. It sounds like there are several hanging out, now.

Shut down any copies that are running in your tray.
Make sure all copies are off the desktop.
Go to Add/Remove Programs, and uninstall any copies it lists there. Reboot.

Using My Computer, navigate to:
C:\Program Files\Folding@home\Folding@home-x86\
Delete this folder if it still exists.

Still using My Computer, navigate to:
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Folding@home-x86
Delete this folder if it still exists.

Once you've got this all cleaned out, you're ready to progress to part two: downloading the no-nonsense console client to your machine. I will put that in the next message for you.

You want to download this one.
Part Two: Downloading the client.

Go to »folding.stanford.edu/English/Download and scroll about halfway down the page. Find the one for
Windows XP/2003/Vista Console client only zip file (with Windows-service-install option).
Click on the Windows icon to download the program in a zip file. When prompted, save the file to your DESKTOP so we can find it in a minute.

You're going to unzip the client to this new folder. Open the zip file on your desktop, and choose "Extract All Files." For the location for unzipped files, type in
C:\FAH
Click Finish. The client will extract to your new folder, and the screen will show you the extracted file.

Verify the file is in C:\FAH. It will be called
Folding@home-Win32-x86
(you may or may not see the .exe, depending on your computer settings).
Delete the zip file from your desktop. We don't want too many of these lying around!

OK. Now that you have the client downloaded, unzipped, and sitting in the folder, we're ready to start the configuration.

This will be in the next post.

Click for full size
Here's what it will look like.
The first time you double-click on the client, it will run the configuration for you.
Open the client you just installed from the C:\FAH folder.

User name: onDvine
Team Number: 4
Passkey: just hit enter
Ask before fetching/sending work? just hit enter (no)
Use proxy? just hit enter (no)
Acceptable size of work assignment and work result packets? right now, just hit enter (normal)
Change advanced options? yes
Core priority? just hit enter (idle)
CPU usage requested? just hit enter (100)
Disable highly optimized assembly code? just hit enter (no)
Pause if battery power is being used? just hit enter (no)
Interval, in minutes, between checkpoints? just hit enter (15)
Memory, in MB, to indicate? just hit enter
Set -advmethods flag always, requesting new advanced scientific cores and/or work units, if available? just hit enter (no)
Ignore any deadline information? just hit enter (no)
Machine ID? just hit enter (1)
Launch automatically, install as a service in this directory? yes
Disable CPU affinity lock? just hit enter (no)
Additional client parameters? -local -verbosity 9 -forceasm
IP address to bind core to? just hit enter

Once it goes through and grabs the first core, I want you to then hit Ctrl+C to shut down the client, then reboot.

When you reboot, the system will then start Folding@Home as a service. You will not see anything in your system tray, or on your desktop, or anything like that. In the next post (which may take me a minute to create, as I need to get my shower and get to work ASAP) I will help you create shortcuts on your desktop to your MyFolding link so you can check progress.

Phew! So glad my XP install on this Mac didn't have a client yet - made it easier for me to walk through for you!

Thank you, ehansman See Profile.

I've already purged everything from the previous installation:
Removed - Add/Remove Programs
Removed - folder in Program Files
Removed - folder in >Docs & Settings, >Owner, >Application Data
Removed - 2 items found in search of C:\ for F@H
Removed - firewall permissions
Cleaned up using Registry First Aid

Will print out your instructions and give it another shot. Hope I recognize when this happens:
... Once it goes through and grabs the first core, I want you to then hit Ctrl+C to shut down the client, then reboot. ...
Cross your fingers for me?

Nice wake-up call, Erin, thanks for picking up where we left off. This is where I was gonna' go, too, so I'll leave you two at it and go delete stuff in one of my other forums.

Fingers crossed...mentally, at least! It's kind of hard to type, otherwise.

Sounds like you are ready for the install part. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

I am. Everything went fine except nothing closed when I hit Ctrl+C, so I just exited using the Xs in the upper right corners and rebooted.

Attached is a screen snapshot of it running in Task Manager.

YOU DID IT!!!!

Now, one last thing to check.

(There's always one last thing.)

Go to C:\FAH from My Computer. Upload the fahlog.txt for me, please, so I can make sure everything is cool.

Yup - it's beautiful!!!

Great job, onDvine See Profile. Now just let that thing crunch away - you can totally forget about it now!!

Did you notice the link to MyFolding.html in your C:\FAH folder? If you make a shortcut to that file on your desktop (or drag the file to your desktop) you can check on your status whenever you want.

Looking forward to seeing that next unit hit! You've been a real trouper.

What a relief! Today will be a much less stressful day (for Bubbles & Ernie, too) than yesterday was...provided nothing unrelated/unforeseen occurs.

I put a shortcut to MyFolding.html on the desktop and will stash it in an easily accessible folder that already exists.

Look forward to getting the second unit done without any help from that fairy, sweet though s/he was.

Edit: Hopefully, your instructions will help new members in the future. They greatly simplified the process.

I do so love a happy ending!

Just remember - let the service do its thing. You should not have to go into that C:\FAH folder to start anything, ever. Services are AWESOMESAUCE.

Please give the kitties a cuddle for me, and have an excellent day!

Great job, ladies!

Now we need a FAQ entry new members see first, one particularly addressed to Windows users who really are not and do not wish to be computer nerds, one that makes it clear which client to get and how to install it for trouble-free folding.

Part of the issue here, I think, is that the systray version is listed first on the download page. I think it really is an attempt to make things easier for new ones, but it really doesn't.

Sorto, if you want to take any/all of these instructions and put them in a FAQ, go right ahead.
Alternatively...
If you want me to come up with a FAQ, I should be able to do that over the weekend. Let me know! I'd be happy to.

It's perfect as it is. All it needs is to be put into one post with a prefacing comment making it general rather than directed at me.

Maybe one change: to exit those windows rather than using Ctrl+C, which didn't seem to do anything.

Hopefully, this will get us started. I also linked it in the folding section of "How do I join ..."

»Team Helix FAQ »Want to install Folding@Home? Look here first!

Doesn't matter who does the FAQ, whoever gets to it first. If you can do it this weekend, that will likely be you.

I agree. That long thread is proof it doesn't make things easier!

You need to click at the top of the client window to get focus on that window first. Then press Ctrl and C simultaneously. That will close the window.

I try to do that when the client is not busy writing to disk, at least 30 seconds after it writes end of frame or a checkpoint, to avoid stopping it while it might be both writing new data and, worse, replacing the backup. After closing, I try to give another 30 seconds or so before ever shutting down the computer, to make certain all the writing is done and core is safely shut down.

Didn't do that, or know it was necessary to. Future readers will, though, because you just said it.
