TSI Usenet vs. Paid Usenet

Hello all,

In the past few months or so I've thought myself how to use Pan and SABnzbd+, and have used Usenet at infrequest intervals.

With the possible advent of UBB I'm considering switching to usenet full time so I can get the same amount of data, but with reduced bandwith cost. Right now I'm feeling pretty lazy which I why I keep using BitTorrent because I know it well.

Assuming I wanted to use Usenet full time, would I be better off with a premium usenet provider a la Astraweb?

For more seasoned users do you think Premium Usenet is a good deal?

I've also heard that some people keep TSI Usenet and buy blocks of Data for older stuff...

Any thoughts?

Yes Astraweb is well worth the 11 US month. Also if bell gets shot down on the UBB crap usenet is great for downloading a shit-ton of stuff being as you don't have to upload anything back.

I use it to get all my HD stuff so I can play it on the WD media player.

Usenet does have its own weaknesses though.
No uploading, but you have PAR files to fix CRC errors.
Missing parts and the whole parts thing can get annoying
Sometimes you grab most of something just to find out a single piece is too old / gone and you have to wait for a PAR file to be upped just to fix the file or try again from the beginning.

Tried a pay to have usenet for a bit and found myself back on torrents, not due to being lazy, but since usenet simply didn't work so well at all for what I was looking for.
Even with a huge >250 day retention.
I didn't try multiple providers though, just the 1 that was both high speed and insane retention times.

HD content was like, 10's of thousands of pieces and this lead to alot of waste when things were missing..

If UBB comes, I feel using IRC could make a much better solution.

Just an FYI SaveTheNet See Profile if you use something like HellaNZB or SABnzbd+ it eliminates the need for PAR, PAR2 and CRC errors.

The few times I've used Usenet, my only issues were with older files.

Long as you download the stuff in your providers Retention you should not have many issues with missing files. I love it no way I could never upload all the stuff I download with usenet back using torrents. 720P rips are near 5 gigs and 1080P ones are near 12gigs.

With usenet and my HD player it's good stuff.

However to Rephrase from Senior Usenet Users; if a Premium Provider worth the cost if I already have the StaticIP/Usenet bundle from TSI?

Bearing in mind I want to replace BT with Usenet.

My only complaint with the TS usenet feature is the speed cap. I have gotten used to downloading a 1Gig .avi in under 1/2 hour. Leaving the computer on for another day or so to try and seed back isn't really a concern.
But, with TS cap, I invisioned waiting a day for something ..and if you want to seed back to retain your ratio, you have to be fast - or there are no 'takers' for your seed.
That's my reasoning..for what it's worth...

Seeding is BitTorrent thing, I've never heard of seeding on Usenet...

Most of us are here with Teksavvy because second place wasn't good enough.

If you're going to use newsgroups (which I assume is the same as saying usenet but I might be wrong), then you should just go all the way and use Giganews. Because don't you deserve the best?

I hear you on that... but I'm considering Astraweb, not Giganews.

I don't really want to make this a which paid server is best, but need to know if (any) paid service is worth it over the bundle.

I'm beginning to think it is.

I've used Astraweb for a few months now and previously Giganews. I don't see any difference in performance at all, I can max out my speed on both and Astraweb is much cheaper which is actually the only reason I switched.

This offer is so good I almost signed up at work...

But then I'd have to pretend I was sick to go home and play with my big fancy Usenet subscription... it wouldn't go over well.

On the Astraweb website, the plans that i notice are Unlimited and Unlimited DSL.

With Unlimited, the cost is $10/month U.S., but the download speed is limited to 1 mbit/sec. With Unlimited DSL, the cost is $15/month U.S., and there is no limit to download speed.

So i'm wondering which is the $11/month plan you guys are refering to. Is it the 1 mbit/sec limited one, or unlimited one, or is there a special offer not posted on their website ?

It also says on their site that retention is being upgraded to 365 days.

I was looking at giganews because I used to use them for a few months about a year ago. Looks like they're still a complete ripoff. Astraweb is almost half price with the same features.
