DC Project: Folding@Home

Folding@Home

Folding@Home (FAH for short) is the brainchild of Vijay Pande, a professor at Stanford University. A summary from the [FAH website]:

Understanding how proteins self-assemble ("protein folding") is a holy grail of modern molecular biophysics. What makes it such a great challenge is its complexity, which renders simulations of folding extremely computationally demanding and difficult to understand.

FAH centers on finding cures to diseases that plague humanity like Cancer, Alzheimers, cystic fibrosis, CJD (Mad Cow disease), an inherited form of emphysema, and even many cancers.

In an email from Vijay Pande:

You can add type II diabetes and ALS. We're directly looking at proteins from Alzheimer's and soon will look at those from type II diabetes.

AIDS is fairly different. However, soon we will be releasing a F@H protein which does have more direct relevance to cancer. After we see how that worked, our plans are to move to HIV protease. I'd love to jump to HIV first, but that would be a bit rash. If it didn't work, we wouldn't know why. Thus, we are starting small and working our way up.

The goal of FAH strives to understand how existing proteins attain their specific, functional three-dimensional structures.

This all sounds very interesting and exciting right? And now you want to join the project, right? Well, where do you go from here? Let us cover that now. Each of the projects has a team here at DSL Reports. This project is sponsored by:

Team Helix

Founded by Zhen-Xjell and co-hosted by mattmag See Profile, Icarus See Profile, and Santa Fe See Profile, the team is found in their own [forum].

Team Helix has two projects:
    •Folding@Home
    •Genome@home

Once again, come and join us, you'll be glad you did. You need not join this team but still join this project on your own, or you can join any or all of the teams.

The choice is yours.
