| Video editing software
I would like a video editing program that will let me trim both ends off a video clip, at the frame level.
I've tried Windows Movie Maker and it's not that accurate.
I have Nero v6 and its editor, but I when I try to trim both ends, I loose too much off the front. For instance, I have a video clip that is 31 minutes long (mpg-2 format). I want to remove 6 seconds at the beginning and 54 seconds at the end and it removes 60 seconds from the beginning.
So, what is a video editing program costing less than $60 (or so) that will let me edit the clip like I want? |

Just to let you know this is the best you can get and it's so easy to use, just set the marks and click on the scissors icon and that's it. Click on save as.. Saves in real time so that means it just like saving a file in Word. Takes a few seconds to 3 minutes for larger files. Then again depends on your CPU and RAM. |

You said less than $60 so that rules out the professional software I was going to say called Edius pro but I think there is a lessor version for 200 so that's out too.
That software from Womble will actually degrade the video if it has to re-encode the video and even it it doesn't the quality is so so. I seen it happen as I used to use it.
If you want to edit MPEG2 without re-encoding the video and author right to DVD you might want to look at Videoredo TV suite. I have this software and it's been working great for me. Even if you don't want to author to DVD there is a lessor version that just keeps your MPEG2 format too. You can always try the trial version and see if that is what your looking for.
Since you already have MPEG2 files you don't want to re-encode the video you will lose quality that way. And you think about why would you want to re-encode something if it's already MPEG2 to start with. |

| Maybe I should have explained what I've got and what I want:
I have been converting VHS-C camcorder tapes to digital format. I have a KWorld card that allows me to input either composite video or S-Video. I've been using the S-Video input. The KWorld "DVR" software encodes in mpeg-2 format and 640x480 size.
When I do the recording, I always get several seconds of "blue screen" at both ends of the digital recording. The beginning is between the time I hit "record" on the DVR panel and when the tape actually starts rolling. Also at the beginning is the standard "synch" stuff with the colored bars and junk.
I'm wanting to trim the digital file so that it starts cleanly and also doesn't have the "trailer" at the end. Most of the trailers are a couple of seconds, which doesn't bother me, but I was not at the computer when one finished and it is over a minute long.
The video quality I have is OK for standard definition TV, but I don't want it degraded any further. Also, for some reason, the Nero editor reduces the audio about 25% when it saves out the edited piece, so doing 2 edits gave me a video that was too soft. |

| I am pretty sure that with VideoRedo you will be able to clip the front of the piece and the end of the piece then tell videoredo to output the in between points with no changes to the encoding of the piece (in other words aspect ratio, encode rate will not change). Also VideoRedo will not change audio.
Sorry, I don't have nero to advise you on that. |

Now I see what your doing.. I take all VHS connect them to DVD Recorder standalone unit then I use Womble MPEG-VCR for editing. Quality is the same. Using computer unless you got professional equipment is not going to have good results.
Take that cam and get yourself DVD Recorder they're cheap now and connect that cam-corder into it. Set the speed to SP or higher. Now you'll need a DVD player on your PC as you will need to copy the video.vob back to your HDD. then rename those files as video.mpg. Womble does the next step then you edit the files. |

| "VideoReDo - Plus" (the cheap version) does exactly what I want. It is easy to use. It took me about 2 minutes, total, to understand how to clip out the part I want to keep. It also only took 59 seconds for it to store the 28:54 long file, which is basically the time to copy a 900+ MB file.
My machine is a P4, 3.2 GHz, 1 GB RAM, so it is reasonably quick. |

| I been using the VideoRedo for about 10 months without any problems what so ever. I been digitizing my VHS tapes (slowly but surely about 3 a week) using Pinnacle Studio (without issues too). Then using VideoRedo to take those unedited MPEG2 files to edit them and burn to DVD without having to re-encode the video/audio. I not seeing any issues with VideoRedo it just plain works for me. I like this software because it keeps the quality the same when burning to DVD or making an edited MPEG2.
The TV station I worked at use to use Womble and we noticed that anything passing through that software was degraded noticeably. Obviously they didn't want another consumer product so they went with Edius which for home use is overkill but not for a TV station. Anyway, When I found VideoRedo and saw how easy it is and it does not touch the quality of the original file well I had to get it. No render times to deal with.
My computer is a Phenom 9600 with 2 gig of ram and Sata drives. I keep my computer clean from unwanted software etc. |

Broomall, PA | I wanted to add that I also record to hard drive from a Satellite Receiver, in other words the receiver makes the MPEG2 file. I use VideoRedo to make DVDs from that too. Works for me and quality is great. |

1 edit | Well I've been at this since 2003 recording to the HDD using different WDM and PVR software off CATV. Prior to that I made MPEG2 to DVD from these recordings. Also I've use VR you all like to use Womble MPEG-VCR isn't that fancy but you can clip out commercials on the fly and saves in a few seconds depending on the video itself. I have both VR MPEG-VCR but I still enjoy using MPEG-VCR. |
