Truly amazing is that ISO 25,000 equivalent, though noisy, is no worse than Tri-X used to be at ISO 1,200. Wow! I need one.

I would suggest that a two camera kit consisting of a D300 and a D700 is almost ideal. Yeah, and if I had a four-bay garage, parking a Lamborghini and a Ferrari in the other two stalls would be ideal. Sadly, ...

D700 will get you wider. put them together and shazam -- "We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us.... I think the D700+D300 combo would be a good compromise in cost and performance. Event photogs, esp. weddings benefit from having 2 bodies. 1. no fumbling with lenses. 2. You have a backup body.
A 70-200mm on the D700 and the 17-55mm DX on the D300 could be a good combo.
or.. 70-200mm on the D700 and the 24-70mm on the 2nd D700.
Sounds like quite a workout!
