[Regarding image quality] ... among the lowest noise and otherwise highest image quality of any camera.
Hard to not like that.

Truly amazing is that ISO 25,000 equivalent, though noisy, is no worse than Tri-X used to be at ISO 1,200.
Wow! I need one.

I would suggest that a two camera kit consisting of a D300 and a D700 is almost ideal.
Yeah, and if I had a four-bay garage, parking a Lamborghini and a Ferrari in the other two stalls would be ideal. Sadly, ...

I'm curious how well it works with DX lenses and the quality of the 5mp NEF. (I'm assuming that it can record NEF in crop mode)

ew, I dont like the fx on the strap. ill put a d1h strap on there instead, they were softer back then anyways. I also hate the d3 strap as the leather side is now rough fake leather. But i have spent 0 time looking for good replacements, so I cant complain right now.

That seems a little redundant doesn't it? What does the D300 that the D700 doesn't, and the D700 is barely a quarter pound heavier. I think a D3/D700 combo would be killer.

Interesting that it has a LCD cover. Does that mean that it doesn't have tempered glass over the screen like the D3?

IQ should be identical to the D3, so there's really little need to wait for test results.

I think his point was using the D300 for long lens shooting since the crop factor gets you out further... D700 will get you wider. put them together and shazam

D3 + D700 = $8,000
D700 + D300 = $4,800

I think the D700+D300 combo would be a good compromise in cost and performance. Event photogs, esp. weddings benefit from having 2 bodies. 1. no fumbling with lenses. 2. You have a backup body.

A 70-200mm on the D700 and the 17-55mm DX on the D300 could be a good combo.

or.. 70-200mm on the D700 and the 24-70mm on the 2nd D700.

Sounds like quite a workout!

D2x and D2h For Sale!!!!!!! (PM ME)
I have had the D700 for over a week now, and I have used it during 2 weddings for over 1500 frames. Overall its a great camera, but I am not sure if its right for me. I am hard on my gear and have the highest standards, even the little things annoy me.

Positives:
• D3 quality in a small body, files look identical.
• solid build quality vs 5d and d200/300. (other than CF door and pop up flash, I hate them both)
• shutter is quieter than d3.
• Battery life really surprised me, better than d200.

Negatives:
• the auto focus is not as confident in very dark situations.
• focus points are very bright, and non-adjustable, it causes glare on the mirror when they are activated.
• body size doesn't feel as good in my hand, its just not balanced with anything less than a wide or mid zoom. Feels awkward to me with anything 70-200mm or larger. I HAVE to use two hands with anything but a light weight wide zoom or fixed. (I know you are saying "who cares, use two hands dummy" but I do some one handed shooting while hand holding an off camera flash.)
• pop up flash is loose on the top, I taped it down, pops up when the button is slightly bumped which happens allot when a camera is hanging on your shoulder.
• I really miss the exposure indicator in the viewfinder and the back info display (I am trying to train myself to use the info button on the back to see iso and other settings at a glance, but that is slow going).
• RAWs are not compatible with anything but NX2 for right now. This is really the most annoying thing, but its partially my fault for early adopting, partially Nikon's for being greedy and not sharing pre-release info to other vendors.

Most of these negatives can be put in perspective by looking at the price difference between these two bodies. Its still an amazing camera, but the best can be had for $1700 more.

I sold my second one to my friend who came from a d300 and he loves it. His favorite thing, other than the low noise, is the fact that its full frame.

I don't think I will be keeping this one much past when/if Nikon releases a d3x. I may get more used to the size and change my mind, but after using full size bodies for 9 years, I am more accustomed to the feel and balance they provide.

Wait, it doesn't show the over/under exposure meter in the viewfinder? Where is it located then?

Sorry I wasn't specific, on the d3 the over/under exposure meter is giant and on the right side of the mirror. now its small and at the bottom next to the aperture and f-stop info.

Ah, okay. That is similar to Canon where the prosumer models have it on the bottom as well.

Wouldn't adding the grip put in line sizw-wise with the D3?

Yes, but that makes it heavier than a d3. EEEK.

Kyle - thanks for sharing your experience with it. I dont' think that you'll have any problems selling off your D700.. Perhaps a D700s in the future? I'll check out the crops soon
