I noticed something interesting with torrent download

Hi.
I've noticed something..I use bt 6.0.3 for my downloads right now and lately, I have been getting a major error at about the 3 minute mark with most of my downloads.. something like "Cannot access the file as it is in use by another process.." Then the dl stops.

But other downloads work just fine.

I've noticed that the only ones that get an error are from torrents I've obtained from the better known sites like Demonoid, torrentspy, etc.

The one I never have a problem with is a very obscure server that has at most, about 1600 peers downloading from it at any one time. It's a very small market but the stuff is free anyway so no copyright issue.

Tonight, I seem to be able to download a file that has uses multiple trackers. One that is popular, the other obscure, and it appears that download will be okay.

So, not only is shaw throttling the bandwidth, it also appears to be disrupting the traffic from the specific servers..

Anyone else notice this?

Re: I noticed something interesting with torrent download

Quite the leap in faith you've made there.

I can't speak with certainty outside of Southern Alberta when it comes to the throttling of torrents as I haven't had the opportunity to do any testing outside of that area, but torrents are NOT being throttled here. I can, and frequently do, max out my 10mbps connection through torrents.

What I can speak with certainty about, however, is that Shaw is not influencing traffic from specific servers.

Your problem lies solely with your computer, and the software therein (specifically your torrent client). A quick search on google will provide you with a plethora of people suffering from similar issues. Alas, I can't access those sites at work to give you a specific link...

I have to agree. That's a rather huge leap, considering the message is "Cannot access the file as it is IN USE BY ANOTHER PROCESS"... which tends to mean that another program on your computer is trying to access it. It's absolutely NOTHING of an outside job. It's entirely on your end.

Hmm.. I can't see my system trying to access something that is only 0.03% downloaded..

This is a new phenomena anyway. It's about a month old.

Well, it was just a thought..

Perhaps an AV scan, or defrag trying to access?

Re: I noticed something interesting with torrent download

it could be the BT client it's self doing stupid things

twirai

@shawcable.net
Perhaps I'll see if there's an upgrade to the client.

Funny thing though, I had 3 demonoids crash and burn today, yet my obscure site is happily trucking along..

Re: I noticed something interesting with torrent download

That's as may be -- but I don't think anybody here is buying that Shaw, through their network management, is somehow able to start another process to lock the file. The error message clearly suggests the problem is on your machine. If you suddenly lost all your open connections you might have reason to be suspicious, but "in use by another process"? Nope, just not buying it.

Further -- does a BT client even care much about the tracker once peers are connected? Does a peer obtained from Demonoid look different than a peer obtained from Obscure_Tracker_01?

Did you check the web search suggested by CogitoSum, above?

Out of curiosity, what are the differences in file size between the two sources? Also, the amount of seeders and leachers?

twirai

@shawcable.net

Hi Cog et al...

Yes. I did check some other sitse and other people are reporting the same problem. Some workarounds include shutting off indexing (which I did, no luck). Have to search for more possible solutions.

The file sizes are significantly different
1.6 GB (Demonoid) seeders= 1 leachers = 6
170 MB (obscure site) seeders = 412ish leachers=>1000

BT does seem to check back to the tracker as one of my files appears to be crossreferenced to 2 different sites. In the info screen about the file, it appears to switch between two trackers.. But I see what you mean by 'why would it care'..

Okay, looks like problem sort-of solved.

Switched to utorrent and things are moving along..

Re: I noticed something interesting with torrent download

Does uTorrent give the same error as your previous client?

twirai

@shawcable.net

Yes, sadly it does give me the same error.

I had wondered if maybe the files within the torrent had a filename size that was too long. I swear this one has to be about 70 characters for pity's sake... I wish people wouldn't do that, it is unnecessary.

But I found a workaround for myself in the meantime. I noticed that one of the torrents seemed to hang on a specific file so I stopped that particular file within the torrent.

When I did receive the error previously, I also noticed that BT/UT had seemed to delete the portion that had been downloaded up until I received the error. I have also worked around this by shutting off U/T every once in a while so it could finish its 'write to disk' mode and I can move the torrent along..

Not pretty, but it seems to work for now..

MAX_PATH bummer

@shawcable.net

It looks like you have encountered Windows MAX_PATH. (Limit 260 characters for a file's entire path specification, which will cause no end of grief for files that violate this limit, because Windows Explorer is unable to process the file at the kernel level):

»blogs.msdn.com/brian_dewey/archi···263.aspx

Try saving your target files to C: or D: (i.e., into a subdirectory of the root drive of your hard disk), rather than into a deeply embedded folder such as C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\...), in order to shorten the overall path.

Hope that helps!

twirai

@shawcable.net
Thanks Max.

I am trying that now and I'll let you know..

twirai

@shawcable.net
Well, I'm at 4% and going strong on one of my bigger files. I saved it to C: instead of burying it, and that seems to work. I'll let you know when it finishes, eta 2days..

twirai

@shawcable.net
In case anyone still cares.. problem has been solved. It was the long file name issue compounded by both the file name and the length of the path it was buried in.

Thanks to Cogs for the direction...
