Industrial fire controlled in eastern LA County

INDUSTRY, Calif.—A fire and several explosions erupted Thursday at a refinery, but no injuries were reported, fire officials said.
The fire and several blasts were reported at 10:47 a.m. in an exterior cooling unit and a large hopper at the Seventh Avenue refinery, Los Angeles County fire Inspector Sam Padilla said.
Workers left the refinery and 50 firefighters controlled the blaze in about an hour, Padilla said.
A hazardous materials team was sent to the site but no toxic chemicals were released, he said.
Initial reports indicated the refinery handled plastics, Padilla said.
However, records for the address indicate it is the Quemetco Inc. refinery and that it smelts used lead batteries and other metal. Calls to the business did not go through.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.

| that's bullshit about the no toxic chemicals were released. there's always toxic checmicals released, and the smoke billowing from the plant were thick, thick black.
someone better do some tests locally. that plant deals with lead, chromium, mercury, and some other heavy metals. poison poison poison. |

drove past the site this evening... there's a gigantic recycling symbol on the side, it was the battery recycling plant.
at the top, there is a large smoke stack that's on it's side. my guess is that it's too heavy to be upright with all the filtration that has to go on. the largest part is what caught fire, and my guess is that's the part that has the most filter in it, and therein the most gunk, which all got released all at once today.
i believe, though i'm not sure, that the place mainly recycles lead acid batteries, but they may do all. every year we get an environmental impact statement from them (partly because everyone wants them to move) that has a map with concentric rings that tell where the lead is, the cadmium, the chromium, and the lead. our house is outside most of the rings.
maybe this will be enough to get them the hell out of here. or maybe they'll buy a better filtration system that won't disperse the heavy metals as much. |

rsr/quemetco recycles lead acid batteries / recycles the lead melts the old lead
purifies it with those chemicals most of the time according to customer specs
tin, mercury, ect
then rsr delivers it to battery plants who use the lead to make new batrteries unless you want to fill up your land fills
maybe this will be enough to get them the hell out of here. or maybe they'll buy a better filtration system that won't disperse the heavy metals as much.

i'll take a stab at it.
each year we get a letter in the mail from Quemetco. a letter they are required by state law to send to everyone within a certain distance from the plant. in the letter is a map of the local geography and streets that indicates which areas see heavy metal deposits (presumably from soil and ground air sampling) at levels above the area's average, and i think above federal and state guidelines.

i'll see if i can dig one up. the heavy metals, as i've said above, include lead, mercury, chromium, arsenic and others.
i think i'm going to call the permit maintenance supervisor and see what's up. otherwise, i'll contact the various environmental officers that were part of the last permitting action.
their plant is in a perfect spot to build a parking lot and station for a metrolink stop. the tracks go over 7th avenue there so there won't be a traffic issue. that particular line completely misses the entire city if industry/hacienda heights area all the way from the 57 to somewhere in bellflower, and something like it is needed. |
