| Telus gives IP, but still no Internet or log in prompt
(I don't know why my name says "@rogers.com")
Hi all,
I'm a Telus employee (non-DSL employee)and I've switched ISPs because I didn't have a choice. I'm in Ontario BTW.
I've got no Internet. My line was provisioned a couple of days ago, and I see the "DSL" and "Internet" lights solid green on my Telus provided Speedtouch ST516 v6.
I've called tech support a few times, and after a total of over 60 minutes of "troubleshooting" and being put on hold -- no internet. Moreover, twice they told me they'll call me back soon or the next day. I haven't gotten a call back.
I was told that by theory, the modem gets an IP from Telus, and when I open up IE, there is a prompt to enter in my PPPoE credentials. It's never happened. By the way, the modem gives me an IP (10.xxx.xxx.xxx, DNS suffix on.hsia.telus.net) when it feels like it.
I've tried many other things on my own, renewing IP from my PC, uninstalling TCP/IP service and reinstalling it, using different PCs, ethernet cables, etc.).
Don't get me wrong, the poor tier 1 guys at Telus tried hard to help me out, but after that, I haven't heard from them or a higher tier support person.
So again, yes I'm a Telus employee, and yes, I've gone elsewhere to get tech support. I'm a little desperate as my family uses VOIP for home phone and obviously, we currently have no home phone. Oh yeah, and I do usually use the Internet for Telus work.
Anyone with experience in such a matter, theories, or ideas, your input would be much appreciated. Thanks much. |

I'm a little confused with your post.
Are you in city place in Ontario?
Do you have TELUS adsl? You said that you switched ISP's so does that mean you have Bell?
Telus, in BC and Ab, does not use PPPoe. Not sure about On.
Also, Why would you use voip? As an employee you would be eligible for the TSD (TELUS service discount). It's pretty hard to beat our rates.

I'm in Toronto.
I now have Telus DSL on a Bell Dry Loop line. I used to have that same line with Bell. Now with my permission, Telus had Bell unprovision my Bell DSL and then re-provision it with Telus DSL.
I was told that the Telus DSL I have uses PPPoE. They even gave me the credentials; the problem is, I can't even get to any prompt to enter it in.
The reason I use VOIP with Primus is because it costs me about $17/mo and I really don't have any problems. Switching over to Telus even with a discount could be asking for trouble. I'll have to think about getting a landline with Telus on a Bell line. I'm not sure I want to open "Pandora's box". Still, now that you mention the employee discount, I'll at least check it out.

If you can get to that site then you should be able register your PC's MAC and get a proper IP. Not sure if you need to use PPPoE, we don't use that in the west.

| It's entirely likely that TELUS uses PPPoE in Ontario. But I'm not sure you'll have much luck with setup help here, since it's not used out West - anyone here using PPPoE, that could help him out?
You might try asking in the Canadian Broadband forum about how to set up PPPoE - just don't mention TELUS, else the thread will probably get booted back over here.
On my Mac at least, I just go to Network Preferences, select my Ethernet adapter, and then click on PPPoE, where there are fields to put in my login info. Not sure how it works on Windows / Linux, but I'd imagine it's pretty similar. |

For PPOE login, goto my network places, Network connections, Create a new connection,
- Connect to the internet
- Setup my connection manually
- Connect using a broadband connection that requires a username and password
If your getting an internal IP from Telus... that should work. Sounds like your modem is syncing, you just need to authenticate.
If that works, you should be able to put your login information directly into the speedtouch, try going to »192.168.1.254 see if it works. |

After speaking with several different techs, only one guy told me I wasn't using PPPoE. Your theory is correct, only I got a different website to go register my MAC addresses. Theoretically, I'm supposed to get redirected to that website, but it doesn't do it, so this tech guy who's quite knowledgeable, gave me a direct URL to punch in.
In summary:
1) Using DHCP (or whatever you guys want to call it), and not PPPoE.
2) Running on a dry loop, in which may or not work for other people.
3) Modem gives a 10.xx.xx.xx IP, in which I eventually type in a URL and register my MAC addresses (PC as well as router). Then you get your WAN IP. At least this is what happened to me.
4) At this point in time, and pertaining to Telus DSL in Ontario, most of the tier 1 Telus techs aren't too knowledgeable about a case such as mine. I'm not so confident higher techs would've figured this out either; who knows though.
5) The speed is only 3mb down and 0.04mb up. I'm not even getting 3mb down though. The surfing is adequate, as you can surf, but may wait a while for video streaming. I haven't tested any gaming yet. I guess that the costs are higher for Telus since they're using Bell lines.

As I've stated above to another poster, I didn't have to go this route, since I found out I'm not using PPPoE. Furthermore, the speedtouch I have is not one you can log into. Otherwise, I wouldn't tried what you listed. Thanks much. |
