| reply to bcastner Thank you, bcastner! I've been having to manually install all updates since I put SP3 on. That was quite an annoyance... -- There are 10 types of people that understand binary numbers. Those that do - and those that do not... |

| reply to Respect Root bcastner and respect root, thanks. I flattened my xp mce box for new mobo, ram and tuner and reinstalled twice (my quick computer like mind not grasping this didn't happen until after I installed SP3), each time same thing. The MCSE after my name takes another blow.... |

| reply to JMcA You are correct, and my bad typo.
Fortunately, it is clarified by the linked KB article, and quite honestly unlikely to be the predominant factor, although I most certainly wish I had gotten it right.

@co.uk | reply to bcastner Many thanks!
This fixed my problem (note that you have a filename wrong in your instructions - the filename is wups2.dll not wup2.dll)
It should read:
regsvr32 "%windir%\system32\wupS2.dll" |

| reply to Respect Root I recently installed XP SP2 on 3 different PCs.
After installation of the OS and drivers, I proceeded to Windows Update. I let WU update itself, but NOT install SP3 when given the choice. At some point during this process I was prompted to install the 3.1 installer which I allowed. After which, I installed SP3 from the standalone download. IE7 was installed after SP3 from a standalone download too. From that point forward no problems with Windows Update or installing new/old software and hardware. Including .net 1.1 & 2.0 and all it's patches. -- "When you set yourself on fire and aim for the sky, you hope to leave behind some sparks of heat and light ... join:2006-04-08 Valdosta, GA 1 edit | reply to bcastner Bill, maybe I'm dense, but how come I have the 3.0 updater when I do a clean install of XP Pro SP3--no slipstream? I never use the automatic updates, only the manual updates. They all install fine. |

| reply to Respect Root Just to let everyone know, I used bcastner's advice and followed the fix in this MS KB posting;
Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP installation »support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

1 edit | reply to Ronnie_USA Not trying to hijack the thread, but I do have a question and looking for advice along these lines. I am receiving a new hdd for my laptop on Tuesday, and will be reinstalling XP Home. My CD install doesn't even have SP2, so is there anything special I will need to do for my reinstall along the lines you guys are discussing? Any and all help is most appreciated! BTW, I do plan on going with SP3 on the laptop, as my tower has been fine with it. |

| reply to szabogi I should note that I have substantially changed how I approach this whole issue, as a utility that formerly was only available directly through Microsoft PSS has been released to the general public; and because there are some other frameworks that I think should also come into play.
The new utility comprehensively re-registers and updates any needed components for Windows Update -- for any DLL used, to any Agent version or other piece that is not at the current release level.
Recommended highly for any issue with Windows Update: »aumha.net/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=33560 -- ============ MS-MVP 2004 - -2008, ASAP Member Users Helping Users

| reply to bcastner Thanks a million for your post. I had done a fresh install of XP Professional with no service packs slipstreamed in. Then, applied SP2, followed by SP3. Had nothing else installed - including AV. Turned on automatic updates and was alerted to install KB898461. This update would not install. Downloaded the update manually from Microsoft and was able to install that way. Then, tried update.microsoft.com to see what other updates were available. Found 4 critical, including IE7. Attempting to install. All 4 failed. That's when I found your post. Followed your instructions -- here's a summary of what I did to get everything working. A few steps in your CMD window step were not needed.
1. Get the windows updater here and save to desktop: »download.windowsupdate.com/Windo···eAgent30
2. Start, Run, CMD
Type these two commands in (one at a time) into the black window to install the update agent. The service will be started again after installation automatically:
net stop wuauserv
"%userprofile%\Desktop\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" /wuforce
3. Finished. Try installing updates from the yellow shield OR update.microsoft.com. Should be good to go now. |

bcastner Premium,VIP,MVM join:2002-09-25 Chevy Chase, MD clubs: | reply to Respect Root The new Update Agent was not included with SP2. (It was not even issued until several years after SP2). |
