| [MCE] XP SP3 Issues
Just tried to install and when Windows restarted, it would only start in safe mode. Had to do a system restore. I don't know what the issue is. Can anyone help me with this?
Not sure what info you need, but I will post what I believe is needed. If you need other information, please just let me know and I will do my best to provide it.
HP Pavilion a1330n Windows XP MCE SP2 IE7
Thanks to anyone that can help with this. |

| Where did you get SP3? According to XPSP3 standalone download site, MCE is not one of the required system.
System Requirements
Supported Operating Systems: Windows XP Home Edition ; Windows XP Professional Edition ; Windows XP Service Pack 1; Windows XP Service Pack 2 |

And I have Windows XP SP2 installed. XP MCE is considered XP Home/Pro I believe. Correct me if I am wrong. |

| reply to Duchess44 MCE is a supported base release.
Can I ask what version of MCE? There are specific issues that need to be dealt with for MCE2002 (only) prior to the installation.
Can I ask what appears when you click in Explorer: Help, About as to the Version of XP being reported?
Could you check in Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, and see if there is a listing for XP Service Pack 3?
At the moment I am not horribly worried, but I would appreciate the answers to these questions as a basis for deciding where to dig deeper. -- ============ MS-MVP 2004 - -2008, ASAP Member Users Helping Users

Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition. Version 5.1 There is no year on it. But when I go into the Help and Support Center, it says Microsoft Windows MCE 2004. Is there another way to find out? Because I thought I had 2005.
There is no mention of SP3. Probably because I had to do a system restore to a restore point of 8:00PM, which is before I installed SP3 at 11:05PM.
Thanks for your help |

| Duchess, the same thing just happened on my old WindowsXP Home system.
I was lazy trying to install a service pack without properly preparing. I used MS Update to install SP3.. when it finished I restarted the computer but it would not get back to the desktop - it kept restarting. I tried "Last known good configuration" and it blue-screened. Got it to start in safe mode and now still waiting for system restore to hopefully bring me back.
I'll try to figure out where I went wrong if restore works.. probably borked because I didn't disable Comodo firewall and Avira before installing SP3. |

| Sounds like exactly what happened to me. It went right to the "do you want to start in the last known configuration" thing. I chose safe mode and had to system restore to an earlier time to get it back to desktop.
I didn't disable AVG when installing. Wonder if that was the issue? Probably not. |

| Yeah I just sat down at this machine to see if anyone else had the same thing happen. Still waiting for restore to finish...
[edit] Ok system restore worked. I'm not anxious to tackle SP3 again tonight..
Three simple steps to to take when I am ready to try again:
1. Download the full SP3 installer rather than use Windows Update.
2. Close all open programs, disconnect from the network, and disable security software.
3. Unplug all non-essential devices (printer, external hard drives, camera).
Could add: And make sure to have a recent backup. |

| reply to Duchess44 Promise me you will not go into Safe Mode if it happens again, and that you will not use System Restore. The choice if this happens again is to start XP in Normal mode.
1. Please check in Add or Remove Programs to see if there is an entry for Service Pack 3.
If so, Uninstall it. If you have IE7 or IE8(beta) installed, use Add or Remove Programs and uninstall.
2. Download the stand-alone SP3 package. This is 315mb, and will not be quick to download: »www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta···ylang=en
3. When the download completes, reboot, and begin tapping frequently the "F8" function key. When the boot option menu appears, select Safe Mode (without Networking). Use as the Logon Name "Administrator" (without the quotation marks). Double click your SP3 dowload to install Service Pack 3.
4. Remember that if you see the Boot Option again after a restart, please choose to enter Normal mode. When your Desktop finishes loading, reboot again.
Please advise of any issues you experienced. -- ============ MS-MVP 2004 - -2008, ASAP Member Users Helping Users

Both of them resulted in it going right back to that screen, in a loop. So I had to start in safe mode and do a restore. Um, I posted above in my last post that I did that and there is no entry for SP3. I have IE7 installed. Why do I need to remove it before installing SP3? I want IE7 and don't plan on removing it. |

Yes, I did too. It just kept looping back to that same screen where you have to choose which start you want. |

| reply to Duchess44 The reason for removing IE7 is given here: »XP SP3 and IE6, IE7 & IE8 (Beta) - Important Information
It is not absolutely necessary. But it does make very difficult the process of doing an in-place repair reinstallation in the future.
We will reinstall IE7 when SP3 has been fully installed.
My primary concern at the moment is that you cannot successfully revert a Service Pack installation by using System Restore. Your computer is presently in a completely unknown state, with pieces of Service Pack 2 and pieces of Service Pack 3 installed side-by-side. The only reason this is not completely obvious, is that you are using an archived set of registry hives. This has to be remedied. -- ============ MS-MVP 2004 - -2008, ASAP Member Users Helping Users

| Ok so if I uninstall 7, will I have 6? Sorry if this seems a dumb question.
Also, as I said, when I rebooted the last time, it would only boot into safe mode. What if this is the issue again?
And I checked and I do have MCE 2005. It was in the add/remove programs |

Bcastner- it wont let you start up in normal mode or last good configuration- that is the problem. You can only get in from safe mode. Guys, i disabled my virus an firewall- thats not the problem |

| reply to Duchess44 Do we all have HP Pavilion?
Trying to narrow down the problem.. Just wondering if there is some connection to gdiplus.dll BSOD that occurred (and was supposed to be fixed) in beta versions of SP3.. I never installed any beta copy, but I do remember getting a "gdiplus" security update through HP Update software a few months (?) ago..
Google search "XP SP3 BSOD" (with quotation marks) and you will find more.
BTW I tried to install in safe mode using the steps bcastner posted above - no joy!
I have to go out now but I'll check back tonight.. good luck. |
