I have a SuperBuddy meter which gives db values to 2 decimals
I can skew the dish every which way and receive value doesn't change
Relative to SKEW, signal strength in dB means nothing. You know full well that this is a digital signal. BER will remain usable over a WIDE range of signal levels. If Az and El are accurate in the first place, SKEW should have no effect on signal strength. SKEW is an adjustment designed to compensate for the fact that the satellite antennas (the ones in orbit) are essentially fixed.

They are fixed, because of the fact they have to serve multiple customer locations some 22,300 some miles below. It would be nice if the satellite would point directly AT you and you alone. But we don't enjoy that luxury, and should adjust our dishes to compensate. Of those adjustments, the SKEW angle compensates for the longitudinal difference (as adjusted by latitude) between the customer dish and the satellite. It has to do with antenna-to-antenna alignment relative to the orbital arc. Granted, there are conditions where the SKEW angle may not contribute to enhanced performance or survivability. But a few open-mined installers have discovered (and reported) that fine tuning SKEW has corrected otherwise undefined connection issues.

Greg, as you know I still concur with you hypothesis. Skew can be important even with circular polarization for the very reasons you've stated.
