connecting with JUST a workgroup switch?

Hello.

Question: I just bought a linksys 5-port workgroup switch... I was wondering, is it possible to use JUST the switch, without a router? The thing is.. I have my fios directly connected to the switch, no other equipment conencted (routers.etc..) it works fine for one computer, but when I try to plug into another port on the workgroup switch, I get no internet on my other laptop. I figured since I can get onto the web on one computer, why not two?

My apologies if this was not enough info.

Thank you. =)

Do you know if your ONT includes a router? If it does then connecting a switch will work fine, the router will hand out multiple IP addresses.

Since the switch only works with a single PC implies ONT does not include a NAT router. In that case you need a router to connect more then one PC at a time.

Most likely, you get exactly one public IP address, which is good enough for one computer or one router. A NAT router will provide an "unlimited" amount of private IP addresses behind it, allowing for multiple computers to access the internet via the single public IP address of the router.

ONT's do not include a router. They are a media bridge.
• Fiber -> RF over coax (video)
• Fiber -> ethernet over coax (MOCA) or cat-5
• Fiber -> POTS

VZ provides the Actiontec MI424-WR wireless router which can be connected to the ONT via coax (VZ preferred), or cat-5. The Actiontec also provides the LAN connection for the STB's over coax which provides VOD and guide data.

The OP was undoubtedly provided an Actiontec by the installer. It's not clear he wants to use a 5 port switch instead of the provided Actiontec.

Bottom line:

You need a router. Unless you buy static IP address from Verizon for each PC, a switch will not give a PC an IP that it needs. The single IP that Verizon supplies you is all that you will get which is only good for 1 PC at a time. A router will be able to take that IP and with DCHP make multiple IP's for each device connected to it.

If you want it to work, use the VZ supplied Actiontec router. Then you can attach the switch to one of its LAN ports for added wired connections.

You can use the switch and hook up 1 PC and it will get an ip but if you hook up another 1 you will have to release the ip and renew it on the other PC

thanks guys, I did get it working. Took a while.

But I still do not have my wireless working. I went through all the needed steps, do not even get the routers wirless switch to light up. Even on the routers page, when I try to get the radio enabled, it goes back to off just as soon as I close the page.

Called up verizon, they said I have to pay for another one. Which I do not get, I mean.. I'd be willing to send it to get fixed, something. Never got the chance to use the wireless.

But that is another subject, which I already went on about in another thread, as some of you may know.

I assume you mean: »Please help, Wireless setup problem.
The last post there was NY TEL's remote assistance offer. Since you didn't post back after that, I assumed you had gotten wireless working with his assistance.

How long have you had the Actiontec? Or do your have FIOS TV?

If you have internet only, the router has a 12 month warranty. If you also have FIOS-TV, the router is under warranty for as long as you have FIOS-TV.

No, He could not figure it out. He tried to fix it using "crossloop", remote assistance.

I am not quite sure how long, over a year , though. I am ok with not being able to get a replacement for free, although it would be nice seeing as how the wireless never worked. Nor will it stay enabled when I turn it on via the routers page. Everything is set up correctly.

I know it is not my laptop, I tested it out by connecting to someone ssid, just for a moment.

It's just bugging me, I mean.. even on the routers page, the radio does not stay on.
