| How many starband users are there now?
Anyone have a figure for how many current starband users there are now?
You don't see many starband posts on the forum now (happened to think of this because when you click "all" on the forum tabs here "sat" is actually hughes, and "starband" is actually other satellite which seems to be mostly 1-way skyway and other satellite posts now.) -- Very happy TDS DSL user | Wildblue in Lake Michigan |

| Funny, I was just thinking the same thing, no posts from Starband users or iDirect users which would also fall under "other"
It could be one of three things:
1) Not enough people are willing to pay the price for the service 2) Users are not aware of this website 3) Those that use it do not have the "challenges" that Hughes and Wildblue has for their customers.
From personal experience iDirect works great but the cost is pretty steep for the residential customer.

| I think when I left starband (still have the dish on my roof) back in 2005 there were around 30,000 or 40,000 customers, which seemed like a lot until wildblue came on the scene and quickly surpassed that and now by a factor of 10... But then the whole starband merger with/buyout by spacenet and I'm not sure how things stack now. I think that stabilized their network, but I don't know if they've picked up new customers as I haven't seen much mention/advertisement for starband -- seems heavily overshadowed by wildblue and hughes. -- Very happy TDS DSL user | Wildblue in Lake Michigan |

plus hn and wb you see everywhere plus on tv, these others you pretty much see zero of anywhere. i would not even know sb or idirect or any of these existed if it was not for this forum. |

I thought since everybody here is generally much older than 18 with pretty much zero kids that bad words would be fine. if they are not.. i am really sorry i didn't know since like I said theres no kids here...I apologize and I will never use a bad word again.  |

| reply to Island Jeff I think that Starband is in a death spiral. You can reach technical support fairly quickly now but they are unwilling or unable to do anything to solve the problem of the service becoming slower and slower over time.
I cancelled the service a few days ago after having it for almost six years. The service has been in a slow decline for some period of time but the decline has accelerated over the past couple of months. They are now using a "throttle" technique which limits your download speed and number of connects -- the result is a service that is much slower than dialin and that operates in fits and starts.
