| Need to replace dead Actiontec router... options?
I need to replace my dead router for a FiOS connection. This is a commercial account with static IPs, so I need to map 4 static IPs on the WAN to 4 statics on the LAN. No wireless gateway needed. If possible, I'd like to get something at the local Circuit City, Best Buy, etc.
Suggestions?
Thanks

Budget? Let's roughly say $400, but that's flexible.

3 edits | reply to BobA90 for ease of use your not going to beat the Actiontec. Most consumer routers like those found at bestbuy or circuit city are not going to support multiple static addresses. The actiontec is decent till you have a large number of simultaneous connections like a busy web server. The zywall is a good product as is the cisco871 or the adtran 2054 or sonicwall devices. I use a cisco871 on my fios 20/20 with 5 static ips, my Actiontec died after 13 months, but beware some of the alternatives are not as easy to setup, but some do have forums on DSR. |

| HI I bought a Actiontec router on ebay a few weeks ago to use as a backup if the router Verizon gave me broke. I have it up and running without a problem. I paid $45 for the unit and that included shipping. I updated the firmware on the initial setup and so far all is working well. I use the router at home for my network.

| There are some comments on this thread: »Which router to replace Actiontec
VZ should replace the Actiontec if less than 12 months old.
I'm assuming you have a cat-5 connection to the ONT. If you have a coax connection, you will need to get VZ to switch the connection to cat-5 to use a router other than the Actiontec. |

then i'd recommend a dlink dir-655...all around amazing router for a moderately high pricetag |

| reply to BobA90 OT: Did you test(meter) the AC/DC adaptor for voltage? I had my home Actiontec go out and for SG's, I put a meter on the DC jack and zero output. VZtech confirmed these go out frequently (Made in Mexico) and he keeps some spares on the truck.
And thanks for the zyxel and adtran references. I'm getting Business Fios in the next 3 weeks and wondered what router they were providing and what alternatives (redundants) I can have on hand. |

| Unfortunatly they still provide the Actiontec for business connections. Its a good product minus the power supply and connection table issues. I host a couple of servers and a web server with 800-1000 client connections a day which I don't think is that much, but was enough to force me to reboot the router every 3-4 days or it got flakey. I bought a cisco used for about 270 on ebay and no more problems. I use adtrans and zyels at small business's all the time without problems. Although I understand the sonicwalls may have issues at 20/20. If you are adding business service at a residence and have TV they will have to add a secont ONT. |

| As far as the firmware issues, for those of you using Ethernet (not MoCA), have you considered third-party firmware (such as DD-WRT, which is available for the ActionTec)? I recently returned to DD-WRT as they actually added the one issue that had me using WhiteRussian RC6 (IPv6 support) to the latest version (V24RC6.2) with my WRT54GS2.1 |

I'm not sure where you got your information. I've been following the forum on the following link which has the latest information on the Actiontec port of the DD-WRT firmware. From this link, it does not appear to be available yet.

The following link which lists supported devices, shows the Actiontec as "Work-In-Progress" with a special board needed, which I believe is the wireless card. No word on whether MOCA will be supported.

| reply to BobA90 Personally, I recommend the Linksys RV082. It's around the $300 range, but it does allow a One-to-One NAT so that you can specify the WAN IP to a single (or a range if you so desire) LAN Client.
I currently use this on my business line, and have had absolutely no trouble out of it.
In addition, if you have a backup connection, it has dual wan ports, the 2nd WAN port can be used as a DMZ if you want, it has a built in PPTP Server, supports multiple IPSec VPN tunnels, and has a few other useful features.
No, it doesn't include wireless, but even if it did, it looks like you would want to disable it.
Here's a link to the Linksys RV082 product site...

Note: The RV082 has 8-ports, but it also comes in a 4-port and 16-port model (depending on your network architecture). |

| Yaco, I believe that as long as you have video, Verizon is required to keep a functional Actiontec at your location...TV service can't work without it. If you drop video, however, I am willing to bet that it instantly would be out of warranty.

| reply to BobA90 Not sure if this is still applicable, but I remember a while back that Verizon had 4 options for routers to use at a business. 2 were Actiontec (4-port residential and 8-port business) and 2 were Adtran (2054 and one that began with 12XX). Have no idea about costs, but if it's still under warranty, I'd think they could replace your 4-port with at least the 8-port (prob be $$ if replacing with an Adtran).

| reply to ProFiOSDude PFD, that brings up an interesting (purely hypothetical)question.
If I have internet only and my router dies; if I then call and add TV, I presume they would replace the router. If subsequently cancel TV within 30 days; do they take the new router back? |
|
 ProFiOSDude Premium join:2005-05-27 Chesapeake, VA
| hmmmm... hmmmm... I would say that they would not seek to get the router back, but I am willing to bet that the date of receipt of the original router would not change. Therefore, should the router you just received die 3 days after cancellation of your video order, replacement would be out of your pocket if it's greater than 1 year.
(my brain hurtz...)
