 [Wireless] WRT160N ... Wireless N-ultra

modem: SpeedStream 4100
router: WRT160N
OS: XP

any advice on this would really be appreciated!

I've been using my modem from AT&T/SBC DSL for over 2 yrs now with a wired connection to a D-LINK router, but recently decided to go wireless with my 2 desktops. I'm on my 3rd wireless Linksys router in 3 weeks because I thought they were faulty. 1st computer is directly wired to the router, 2nd computer is wireless using a Netgear adapter (because the linksys i bought had issues with signals).

The same problem persists since day 1: at least once a day I get disconnected from the internet after several hours of surfing the net. I've talked to Linksys who only says to turn off the modem and router and restart them, they've changed my IP address, and my channels, and who knows what else. I contacted AT&T who had me bridge my modem yesterday and set the router to PPPoE, but yet again I was disconnected. Any time I try to "repair the connection" i get a message saying it cannot renew my IP address.

the 1st computer (4-5 yrs) is the one connected to the router since it is centrally located in the house, and i have the ethernet connected thru a USB adaptor instead of directly into the ethernet plug on the computer (been this way for a year, don't know whats wrong with the ethernet connection in the tower) could that be a problem? should i try to connect it to the newer pc?

You might want to upgrade to an improved firmware - »www.sveasoft.com

I don't fully understand. YOur wired connection is USB from the modem instead of ethernet and that is what is dropping. Or your wireless connections are dropping. Are your wireless connections G or N? What are the settings? If you want help there is more information you need to provide.

thanks for the response,
my wired connection has the ethernet cable connected from the router to the usb adapter, and not the ethernet port. i notice the disconect because computer 1 is usually streaming music and so it will go silent, and then the wirelss computer 2 starts showing "page can't be displayed" when i'm browsing

i can use the internet fine for hours and then it just disconnects, and can't figure out if its because of the router (which i've exchanged 3 times) or the modem (which i'm currently running directly to the pc and haven't had disconnects within this past day)

different tech guys at the different retailers i visited prior to buying my stuff said that since i have desktops it doesn't matter if i buy G or N

does that answer your question? what other information do i need to give you that might help?

You need to answer more questions like are you run a G or N wireless card? Why are you running usb to the router? Is the ethernet card bad in desktop 1?

You should go to the Linksys site and look for an updated firmware for that router.

I had problems with three WRT150Ns followed by a WRT160N. They seemed to be running essentially the same firmware. They were locking up on me every couple of hours. Sometimes they would restart after a minute, but often I had to power cycle them.

I replaced the Linksys firmware with Sveasoft firmware and they have been rock solid ever since. I was even able to configure the WRT150N as a wireless bridge!

I find Linksys hardware with Sveasoft firmware to be an excellent combination.

The 150N has about the best linksys f/w I've found in years. One lockup in months and it never gets turned off or rebooted. I'm sure the are some combinations of settings that cause issues, but the way I use it I have no issues.

Sveasoft firmware project has been dead for a while now...

If you want a decent supported opensource firmware, I suggest you run DD-WRT RC7...»www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.···=wrt160n

Sveasoft dead (chuckle)....not true.

Still going strong after five years.

Full support for all of the latest routers including the Linksys WRT310N.

Check out the latest Talisman/VPN release with IPSec support.

Yeah...thanks but no thanks...just upgraded both my WRT160N's up to DD-WRT V24 Final

WRT160N is OK hardware but doesn't have 1 Gig Ethernet so is a bit old technologically.

We recommend the WRT310N. It's basically a WRT160N internally but with 1 Gig Ethernet.

Since you have multiple routers and seem a bit technical you'll probably be able to manually set up and configure WDS, DNS, DHCP, and static routes yourself in DD-WRT. DD-WRT is based on our older Aclhemy firmware and this must be done manually.

Talisman/Mesh does this all for you plus quite a bit more

Recently[when?], the company's development team has been reduced to the sole owner, James Huston Ewing. The company is managed by Sweden native Åsa Birgitta Erlandsson, who acts as Board Deputy for the company. As of September 8, 2006, the company has reported losses of 159,000 Swedish krona, or US$21,449. For financial reasons, nearly all assets in the United States have been liquidated. [2]

Think I'll stick with DD-WRT...

I'll be posting the latest V1.3.6 release of Talisman/Basic, Talisman/Mesh, and Talisman/VPN next week.

The Wikipedia stuff was posted around three years ago. We should have been out of business quite some time ago if any of it were true
