Re: New Linksys MODEL WRT54G2 v1

I agree that the design sucks. Linksys no doubt thinks it looks "sleek", but the WRT54G looked like a no-nonsense practical design similar to professional products -- I have it on a cabinet shelf along with my cable modem and some other stuff and it looks cool. The new design just shrieks "consumer junk!", even if the unit technically might be quite good. Although the hidden, non-replaceable antenna does not bode well. Not impressed!

No it's not, By the name the WRT54G2 is 802.11g only while the 160N is a 2.4GHz Draft N router

It looks like Linksys is replacing the blue Linky casing they've used for the last few years with the internal antenna black glob of plastic case we're talking about. In addition of the 54G2 and the 160N, the 310N is also in the same form factor.

Isn't that a WRT55AG?

The WRT54G2 v1 is almost as ugly as Netgear's redesigned products (not the purple box-like products of yesteryear).

I noticed last week that all the big box stores dropped the price of the WRT54G by $5 (to $45). Do you suppose they will phase it out soon? What about the GL version?

Netgear's recent stuff doesn't look bad (IMO better than the 54G2), but it's no where near as good as the old blue metal box style they used in the 90's and early 2000's (like the amazing RT314).
