| Routers that will multilink
Hello,
We're having troubles with our ISDN. Our ISP is very hit-or-miss about multilinking both channels for full 128k speed. Our router, a RH348, will attempt to reconnect when multilink fails, but only three times before giving up. As a result, we are often stuck with 64k internet which we pay $100+ per month.
We would like to look into purchasing a different router which can be set to attempt multilink continuously or at least more than three times before giving up, if one exists. Does anyone know of a model of ISDN router that is capable of doing this?
Does anyone who has a Cisco 804 router know if it is capable of doing this? Thanks. |

| Yes the Cisco will.
Your might be able to change your config to try more than 3 times before failing. I'm not familiar with your router.
Make sure your ISP is set up to get both channels simultaneously. If you are specifically paying for dual channel login, I would work with your ISP to resolve the issue.
If your not going through an ISP that specifically supports ISDN, ie yahoo, MSN, etc, it may be just as easy to try a different access number. |

Is the 804 very difficult to setup out-of-the-box? Are there any specific instructions for setting it up for ISDN anywhere? I've gone so far as to contact Netgear to ask about our current router's ability to continuously multilink (RH348), but they said it cannot. It looks like the 804 may be our best option. Hopefully it's not too difficult to set up.. I had some unpleasant experiences with ciscos in the past (simply to due their complexity and number of features) |

My gut feeling is that it has more to do with the numbers you are dialing and not the modem/router.
Did you ever contact your ISP, or your ISP's backbone (ie level 3) ??
I would not classify the 804 as "easy" to set up. It is not too difficult once you put a little effort in. But I would still classify it as a "Moderate to Advanced" level. |

Well, the ISP we are using is PeoplePC, and they don't officially support ISDN. We used to use MSN which worked great for about a year. Then slowly, one by one, each access number seemed to have multilink capability removed. All other ISPs we tried after that had hit or miss or no multilink at all. PeoplePC had the most access numbers and the cheapest monthly cost though, so we went with them. Regardless of ISP though, the RH348 never tries more than 3 times to connect the second channel.
The only local option for an ISP that officially supports ISDN charges about $60/month for it, which is way more than we want to pay on top of our current bill of $100/month. |

I've had good luck with Localnet.
Also there is Yahoo, though be careful not to get blacklisted.
Finally, there is netonecom.net THis is a local joint (here--but they have national numbers, it seems) that seems pretty decent. They lowered their ISDN prices AFTER I was set up with localnet. I've been too lazy to change.

I had to find another ISP a little over a year ago when EV1 got out of the ISP business. I tried Localnet but could not connect with both channels on any of the numbers available in my area. I finally went with ATT Yahoo ($9.95 at the time) and have had no problems connecting with both channels via Houston, TX dial-in numbers. At the time I signed up, ATT Yahoo's TOS stated that two logins were allowed at the same time. As of December, they have increased their pricing to $15.95/month no matter if DSL is available in your area or not.
I hate to say it but it looks like their is no low cost ISDN that is 100% dual channel compatible for everyone. Just depends what area you are in. |
