Normally if you get those and you are doing something illicit, it's usually best to stop. Since you aren't actually doing something wrong, it may be worth sending a note to abuse or support saying they're mistaken. Either way, they generally don't come after you until you have multiple strikes against you, and even then, you weren't doing anything wrong in the first place.

I received one of those a few years ago when my ex-roommate was downloading/serving TV shows. That stopped quickly.

Yes I do have a wireless but that doesn't change the ip address that I don't have. If it was showing my IP address that I have had for at least the last 6 months then that would make sense that someone used my wireless.

By all means inform Comcast that it is not your IP and ask them to furnish a record of all IP's assigned to your account in, say, the last year.

Send them an email which will help to confirm that the IP is wrong, and follow up with a letter by certified mail.

I did e-mail back with my IP address and statement about how long I have had it. Comcast e-mail support has not given out the information's on how long I have had this IP. They keep sending my the "This is how you find your IP address in the following OS". I guess I should let it go but I feel violated and wrongly warned about something I didn't do. If it was my IP I would say ok someone is on my wireless or my 9 year old is setting up her own web sight. I would think that if she could only remember her password.

I doubt that you will get any reasonable response from Comcast support. You need to get the attention of the group that linked you with the wrong IP, as well as get on record about their error.

The person who did the download does not know that he has been caught. If he continues, you could wake up one day to a lawsuit, and that is pretty far down the road to be trying to fix a mistake.

I don't know who to tell other then comcast that I didn't do it. If it's adobe it isn't listed in what was sent to me.

I guess I will print out everything I can and mail to comcast and keep a file for my self. This seem to be like sitting on the runway for 9 hours and having no rights.

I guess other then that I will wait for comcast abuse to e-mail back some year.

*feels a guilty now because i have gotten 2 of them, once for a dvd rip and one for ms office 2k3. Over bit torrent.* Which were real but oh well lol.

Just a word of advice to anyone who uses bi torrent, anyone can query the tracker and find out who is downloading what.

I'M not sure if they go directly to the isp from there or if they verify you are sharing it by connecting to your torrent port. So to be safe, please use peer guardian or some form of blocking p2p companies.

Just to add little to the bit torrent thing, I don't think whoever is checking on them torrents checks to see if your downloading the copyrighted work, I've downloaded mods from torrents that had the full game and got a warning letter.

I also recall something close to this being posted on /. awhile back, someone setup a fake client that just connected to the torrent but didn't send or receive any data, and they too got warning letters from their ISP.

Yes I did send them an e-mail.

added my line test that shows I have had this Ip back to 10-01-2007. My www.speedtest.net show it back to last October.

I called today and left as voice mail. They called back and were nice to talk to. Still have questions to be answered so they kicked it up stairs. They are looking into it and might have an answer in 72 hours! I will post the out come when they call back.

Your answer is looking more like the winner. I finally knock some rust of the brain and did a tracert on both IPs from my house. One goes to me on the west coast the other goes over to the Philly area on the east coast. See below. Comcast out of Denver show the 2 IPs assigned to me and the mac address on the 71 which goes to the east coast is assigned by Netgear. I had no luck talking to Netgear to see if they could tell me if it was a wireless or hard wired device for that Mac.
