Article on Comcast Download Limits

Not so fast, broadband providers tell big users
Firms impose limits even as demand rises

By Carolyn Y. Johnson, Globe Staff | March 12, 2007

Amanda Lee of Cambridge received a call from Comcast Corp. in December ordering her to curtail her Web use or lose her high-speed Internet connection for a year.
Article Tools

Lee, who said she had been using the same broadband connection for years without a problem, was taken aback. But when she asked what the download limit was, she was told there was no limit, that she was just downloading too much.

For every 1 customer that Comcast ticks off by cutting their service due to exessive bandwidth usage, they earn the praise of hundreds of others sharing that same node who have stable speeds throughout the day.

Well they should institute known limits and caps per day.

Say 10 gig per day, you exceed that you are cut off till next day, 300 gig a month.

At least everyone knows what they are paying for.

This unknown shit is for the birds.

the thing is if the limit is set I am 99.9999% sure it is going to be low balled like almost every other ISP with a cap....

let me elaborate....right now If I wanted I could download 250 GB's a month and never get yelled at, but if a set cap is introduced I would probably be limited to something in the neighborhood of 40-60GB's....

Matt Davis, a research director at IDC Corp., said that because of the way cable high-speed Internet works, a person using a huge amount of bandwidth will slow service for hundreds of customers.

...

Verizon's DSL service has a different network architecture that means a single "bandwidth hog" should not affect neighbors and does not limit downloads, according to spokesman Mark Marchand.

...
So a single person can slow service for hundreds of users on a cable network, but it's not so on a DSL (and certainly FiOS) network.

Makes you wonder why we haven't seen a resurgence of those hilarious webhog commercials.

FWIW, DSL may not be subject to a neighborhood capacity issue, but DSL is once again subject to bottle necking right at the Central Office where it becomes a shared bandwidth, as is the entire internet..

Personally I'm against ANY caps.. Comcast should be looking forward and realize that most usage is only going to increase as video and other high bw uses get more popular with the average user.

While it's expensive to keep adding capacity, it is something that needs to be done. I'm a heavy user as i run a few of my large personal websites from home as well as provide various video and other content online.

I can only see trouble ahead whether caps are set, with too low limits, or more and more 'basic' users getting hit with "the call" because they found online video or other bw intensive uses for their connection. Comcast, and cable providers in general, really need to look 2 - 5 years down the road and build / expand their networks appropriately.

its all shared....you download enough you can kill your neighbors no matter what technology....FiOS has what 620Mbps of available bandwidth at any one node? I can see people saturating that rather quickly at FiOS speeds.....

isnt it comcast's fault for supplying everyone on the node with their alloted speed? i mean really think about it if it takes like 1 person to degrade the network buy using their full speed isnt that a problem that should be fixed? Customers shouldnt be banned for using their bandwith capping shouldnt happen the network should continue to expand and move to higher speeds and capacities i mean dont we pay 42.95$ a month for a reason?

I hope that's a joke. Please look at what dedicated bandwidth costs. $400 a month is the cheapest 1.5 Mbps T1 you'll get (Speakeasy promo deal), and Comcast sells you 4x (or 10x in short bursts) that for $40 a month. You seriously expected dedicated 15 Mbps for $40 a month?

You know, I think the thing that really amazes me is the ability for a big corporation to turn neighbors against each other. Such as "Well I'm happy that person lost their connection because Comcast CLAIMED that they were slowing down everyone else's connection." Till of course, Comcast calls them.
And unlike those people, I don't have the money to throw away for bandwidth I don't even use. If Comcast doesn't mention a cap or that, I think most people would think there wasn't one, and actually use the bandwidth Comcast claims it can and is providing them.
If you only use your connection for email or surfing, good for you. Then your really not using what your paying around 50.00$ a month for. You could probably have a 15-25$ a month DSL line and still be happy. But of course, Comcast isn't going to not accept your money. That is of course, unless you come close to using what you pay for. Basically their in the business of time-share condos, but in this case it's time share bandwidth, by the megabyte.
Comcast isn't the first or last company to do this to people. They apparently treat some of their employees terribly when trying to form unions, of course Wal-mart (or china-mart), Target, and many other do to. If I could afford it and convince my relatives to switch to DSL, I would. Because I personally don't intend to support and thus encourage companies like Comcast.

I pay $52.95 per month for speed, not volume.
I pay that premium so when I see the newest kickass game demo, I can download it at 1MB/sec.

Screw a 1.5mbps DSL line - at whatever cost.
I want my downloads here ASAP.

Now keep in mind, Comcast advertises SPEED. "Faster than DSL" - well, there ya go!

If I wanted a slower line, I could get SBC/AT&T DSL.
Uhm, no thanks!

I like having my 8mbps line available to me when I need it.
I do NOT abuse this 8mbps line, I use it.
It is live and waiting for me to click on a download.

300GB per month? What 300GB per month?
Show me something that I can download that will add up to 300GB in a month's time.

23.25GB last month...
Do y'all think I will be getting "The Call"?

Because Telco's are any better? Let's see.. can you get naked DSL? Most areas can't. Why not? Because the Telco's want you to pay for voice services, even if you don't use it.

Oh and then if you're in an AT&T that offers naked DSL, it costs $1 dollar more than the voice service + dsl. Yea what a great savings there!

Yes, and you and all the Comcast users in your area are sharing "your" fast Internet connection. SO it's not really "yours" is it? Even if you pay for the line every month. Why not just pay for the speed when you want to use it, instead of when your not using it, which might be most of the time?

Yeah, but see... I'm ok with that!
*WHEN* I want to use it, it's there!
That's what I am payiong for. Speed and availability.

NOT raw data transfer capacity.

Seeing as the connection is coming through this(and the other) machine(s), the connection *IS* mine.

Ask anyone here if I gets mines...

*IF* I wanted to transfer hundreds of GB per month, I would get a line designed for it.
Comcast HSI is not that connection. Never was meant to be!

*I* understood that when I agreed to the TOS/AUP.
*I* have never gone above 40GB(forty GigaBytes) per month in the three years I have had the service.

No chance that *I* am abusing this residential service.

YMMV.

My last bike had 65HP. I upped that a bit with a few parts.
It wasn't often that I could use all of that HP, but when I wanted(or needed) it was there.

In all reality, I *could* have gotten by with a much smaller, less powerful bike, huh?
I didn't want that though.
I wanted the availability to open it up occasionally.

I don't want that though!
I want to open my downloads up occasionally.

It's not often that I have a need for 8mbps, but when I *DO* want to download something... it *IS* on tap!

Of course your not abusing it. Your even really using it. By some peoples opinion, including mine, your just throwing your money away. And perhaps even worse, to a greedy corporation who has so much disregard for it's residential customers & lower tier employees.

Cabal the answer to your question is I expect MORE than that from comcast other countries have symetrical 100/100 for 40 bucks a month across the park in my neighborhood(where the talleyville and wilmington line is) people have fios 15/2 for 45 bucks a month and they dont have to worry about network degrading due to a couple heavy users nor about getting a call so i think its comcasts fault for not preparing their system for heavier traffic people should not be permanantly banned because they use "too much bandwith" now cabal im not asking for dedicated im just saying people shouldnt have to worry about a few users being able to overload a node. What happens when all the users on that node start using more and more bandwith at the same time? do they all get warnings?? or banned?

It's not your decision what I pay for though.

I don't want a slow ass DSL line. Don't have a POTS line, so no DSL for me - too slow anyways!
I want the fastest line available to me here in Hercules, CA.

Guess what! I have it!
Take another guess on who the provider is...

Yep! It's Comcast!
