1 edit | reply to Packeteers Most *new* software doesn't support old versions of Windows. Why are you saying this like it's Bill Gates' fault that Windows Defender can't run on an old OS? If you want to run W2K, you'll have to live with that problem. Expect to see more such problems with all software, not just MS's, as time goes on.
Look through here and see if there's anything that will work with W2K:

| reply to Packeteers I have successfully tweaked the install program for Windows Defender so it will in fact work on Windows 2000 Workstation and Windows 2000 Server.
I used Orca to look at the MSI file and tweaked the LaunchDir (or something like that) setting. It currently says that the value for Windows NT should be greater than 5. Windows 2000 is exactly a value of 5. All I did was to add an equal sign to the WindowsNT>5 setting where it now reads WindowsNT>=5. I saved it and installed it without a problem. |

| Thanks to everyone here, I downloaded ORCA removed the W2K install limiting statement then my new windowsdefender.msi ran perfectly.
as to why I'm still on W2K, I don't need anything better and can't afford a new computer, or the software migration time.
Strange how this industry wants to give $100 internet ready computers to Africa while forcing the rest of us to upgrade our hardware and software every 5 years.
It's kind of like how the pharmaceutical industry makes American's pay for drugs they discount or give away to the World. |

This clearly demonstrates it's not a limitation of the Win2k operating system, but rather a pressure tactic by MS to force users to upgrade. I can understand when software won't run due to limitations of an older OS, but I despise the business practice of intentionally making the settings so it won't run. -- Team Discovery

| reply to ABL said by ABL ...Why anyone runs anything less than XP is beyond me anyway... [/BQUOTE :Perhaps it's because some people are reverse elitists, not always embracing what MS dictates they need to do when they already have a very capable OS. For the past two years I've used win2K on a older notebook as a backup to linux (primarily to connect my cell phone for broadband or when I really need to see some Flash page) and found it can do anything my desktop XPpro can do and usually faster as there's so much less bloat. Obviously, I'm not 'cutting edge' in the gaming and photoshop world but for basic computer work these OS's do more than I could ask. How does your XP flagship run on the following parameter's? As to the original question, the only protection I've ever used w/windows is a hardware firewall, updated host file, AVG Free, Opera, locked down IE used only when needed and NetSense. Picked and installed only updates I needed from MS. Never had a problem and I still don't even have SP1 on my XP machine no WGA either obviously! Oh yeah, stay away from the porn/warez sites |

1 edit | That's all fine and well....people can run what they want for what ever reasons they want. But they shouldn't complain when MS moves on to other OS's. It's called progress.
This subject has been beat to death in the past. The bottom line is that MS (or any software developers) isn't going to make new software compatible with OS's that are years and years old, nor should they have to as it is counter productive and time consuming to make that happen in *most* cases. -- ~~Well, I think you're crazy, I think you're crazy, I think you're crazy, just like me...~~

The problem with this particular program isn't that it isn't compatible with Win2K, it's that MS made the setting to not work with Win2k. Change the setting and it works fine.
