| PC-cillin 2007 "Building Anti-Spam Cache" takes forever
 Building Anti-Spam Cache |
Please see the attached .JPG
I've used PC-cillin for three years and no problems. Apparently the 2007 version has an anti-spam (I'm assuming email spam)? feature.
I use a totally different approach to controlling my email spam. On automatic updates this "Building the Anti-Spam cache" is taking "forever" and I don't really need the feature (if it's for email spam).
But I can't find where to turn it off so the automatic updates will go "wham-bam" like it did in prior versions. What is this feature, is it for email spam and if so, how can I turn it off so automatic updates will go faster? Thanks in advance. |

| Hey Gwailo,
I was just about use my free upgrade to 2007. I think I'll hold off until this issue is resolved. Approx. how long is "forever", please. Have you tried calling Trend Micro. They advertise 'free phone assistance', although I have never had occasion to use it. (yet)

| JackCam614, It varies but most of the time I'm going to estimate at 3-4 minutes. Need to stopwatch it. The download part is no longer than 2006 but then it sits there doing this "Building the Anti-Spam Cache.
Can't easily call them right now as I'm in Asia on a business trip! |

| Gwailo, thanks for the feedback. 3-4 minutes can seem like an eternity when we are accustomed to their formally 'speedy' updates.
I'll give them a call as soon as I can squeeze it into my hectic schedule. Meanwhile, I'll stick with the 2006 release.
Thanks again,
Jack |

| I just hope someone else here on the forum is using 2007 and has the same problem and if so, what, if anything did they do to fix / disable it. As you can see in the .JPG, it's already downloaded the update (not long at all) and is just sitting there updating this cache thing.
As I initially said, if it's for email spam, I don't need the function but I don't see any way to disable it. And, I can't think of what else "anti-spam cache" would be for except email. |

| Gwailo, I intend to call Trend Micro regarding this subject at my earliest opportunity. Hopefully, as you said, a member with the same problem AND a solution will post and save us the trouble. (I'm not at all lazy, but just so damn busy at the moment)
If I get to call TM, please let me know what features you are using? I'm just utilizing the PC-cillin Anti-Virus, without the firewall and wireless network protection. Are you doing the same, or are you running the 'Full Featured' install? Also, your Operating System, etc.
TIA,
Jack |

1 edit | Summary of What's Off and On |
Hi Jack,
One problem is I installed 2007 right before I came over here 5 weeks ago and haven't had time to study it properly and like you, I'm very very busy.
I have a chronograph on my watch so when I turned the notebook on this AM, I was ready for the update. This is plus or minus a second or so. So looking at the JPG at the beginning of the thread, here are the update results:
Steps 1-3: Total of 12 seconds (I'm on a 5-6 Mbps download DSL line per a Hong Kong speedtest site) but have a rather slow "getting old" notebook (1.1 GHz / 512 MB RAM).
Step 4: 3 MINUTES and 32 seconds!
Step 5: Happened so fast I didn't get it but 2-3 seconds at the most.
Now since then, I went off into the darn thing looking around. I have the entire 2007 Security Suite and using the personal firewall (I'm running XP Pro but have its firewall turned off), and the anti-virus.
Actually they have a good summary detail (see the attached .JPG) so after seeing it, I turned the "Spam E-Mail Filter" OFF. Per your request, the JPG shows what I have off and on right now (previously I had the "Spam E-Mail Filter" turned on.
So let me wait until tonight or in the morning to see if this thing is smart enough to know that I now have the "Spam E-Mail Filter" turned off so it will go back and do it's thing quickly. Will advise and we'll go from there. Thanks for all your assistance, Gwailo / visiting Hong Kong & China but in Hong Kong right now.

| Hi Gwailo,
Thanks for the well documented feedback. I suspect that you have solved the problem by changing the setting for Spam Email Filter to OFF in the 'Protection Summery' window. That used to be called Spam and Fraud Filters in PC-cillin Internet Security 2006, and I have that set to OFF. I'm looking forward to your confirmation that the problem has been solved. I suspect it has. Well Done.

| It's doing it to me, too. This is on a laptop that is not used every day. I have the email and phish filters turned off and it still does the dratted cache. Plus, I'm on DIAL-UP!! I have NOD-32 on 2 other PCs and those updates are so fast it isn't funny. I only got PC-Cillin because of the firewall. I think Trend Micro is keyed to IE somehow. I disabled IE by renaming the file extension. Tried to access TM support, and their support put the file extension back at .exe! I don't find this funny. Now I am looking at a free firewall, checked out Comodo, and they want IE active-X. NO WAY. At one time Zone-alarm wanted IE also, now it just says internet connection. Someone here said pre version 6 in another post. The # on the new free download isn't specific. What's the difference?
Thanks, carpetshark3 |

| carpetshark3, thanks for your input as I've been looking for another user with the problem. Can you stopwatch it to see how long it's taking you to download on dial-up vs. install? Obviously it's going to take you longer to download but if the actual install part is similar to what I'm posting, that could be a very useful clue in isolating download time vs install time (see comments below).
JackCam614, I finally got to watch it again two different times and now that this "Spam email filter" is turned off, it is better but not "fixed." Looking at the original JPG at the top:
Steps 1-3: Still 10 to 12 seconds on the same DSL line.
Step 4: Down from 3 1/2 MINUTES to a few seconds over 1 MINUTE.
Step 5: Still 2-3 seconds.
If I believe what it says it is doing, the actual downloads are not taking that long but it would appear it's still doing "something" during this "Building the Anti-Spam Cache" even though I have it turned off as the hard disk activity LED is on constantly while it is doing it.
I don't have a convenient way to tell if it is still downloading when "check mark 3" says it has already downloaded the latest updates so there is still the question "does it update the anti-apam cache even if you have it turned off" and if not, why is it taking so long to install the updates after it says it has downloaded them? carpetshark3, that's where your timed results on dial-up could be very useful.
Obviously it's now a lot better than it was but certainly not as fast as the 2006 version. All for now. Thanks for your efforts and comments. |

join:2002-08-05 Hillsville, VA | reply to Gwailo I use OE. There is a Trend Micro Anti-Spam box displayed in the upper section/toolbar. Click on the down arrow and click on Disable Spam Toolbar. THAT stops the Anti-Spam Cache download and build. |

| reply to Gwailo Then they really got chummy with MS. Tbird says nothing about it. It's their software and they can do what they want, but it's bad business practice to ASSUME! I think I'm going to figure out how to complain via email - can't do it using FF. page simply loops. I'll probably uninstall PC-Cillin and find something else. NOD32 has been great so far, but no firewall. Weezy |

carpetshark3 Premium join:2004-02-12 Colorado Springs, CO | reply to Gwailo BTW- I just managed to send a question to Trend Micro's support. FF and Netscape just looped. I had to use Opera set to IE and it went! I'll post the info if I ever get a reply.

.jpg/thumb.jpg) My Outlook 2003 Toolbar |
rubyratsky, thanks for you input. I don't use Outlook Express but use Outlook 2003. My toolbar area is attached but I don't see anything like you describe. Do you see it or can you post what your Outlook Express toolbar looks like. Thanks. |

| Not sure if this will work. First time posting an image. Also, in my Programs - Trend Micro, there is a separate UNINSTALL for the Spam Filter.

Thanks |

Just removes the toolbar and that's all? |
said by rubyratsky :Also, in my Programs - Trend Micro, there is a separate UNINSTALL for the Spam Filter. Well rubyratsky, you obviously have the Anti-Spam thingee in your Outlook Express and I don't have it in my Outlook. On your quote above, if you mean what I have in the attached .JPG I "think" that just removes the anti-spam toolbar from your email program, but apparently doesn't keep it from updating itself even though you are not using it.
On posting .JPG's there are some help topics on the forum somewhere that tells you how to do it. Would help you find it but gotta go for now. |
