Actiontec GT704WG Firmware (Verizon Custom) Here It Is!

After reading another thread that was too old to reply to I had to make a new one, but here is the firmware for my fellow idiots that flashed it with the factory firmware.

techtvguy: did you try flashing the verizon firmware to your verizon GT704WG modem that has the generic retail actiontec GT704WG firmware already on it?

I did, and had trouble doing so using the browser UI for updating the firmware. I had to use the telnet updating utility to write the verizon firmware back to the modem.

Yes and it won't work and no one at Verizon or Actiontec will tell me how to do it via telnet.

How do you do it via telnet?

Ok, here is the process. It is easier than it will seem from these instructions.

Download the qwest updating utility:

Run the downloaded file and it will decompress to the directory you specify.

In the directory, note the name of the qwest image file; nsp.kernel.ar7wrd.squashfs.upgrade.img

Then delete or rename the qwest image, and then copy the verzion file to the same directory and rename the verizon image (3.20.3.3.5.0.9.1.5-gt704-wg.img) to the qwest filename (nsp.kernel.ar7wrd.squashfs.upgrade.img).

Of course, this only runs on windows xp. If you have any third party firewall software, turn it off.

Now, run gtupgrade.exe and follow the prompts.

After the firmware is transferred, the utility will say to power down the modem, but the utility will still be running and waiting for the modem to reboot. Power down the modem, but then close the utility (because the utility is waiting to transfer a qwest configuration file after the modem reboots - and you don't want this). Use task manager to kill the process 'gtupgrade' because you won't be able to close the utility manually.

Now power up the modem. Press and hold the reset button on the back until the power LED glows orange. Then, power down the modem again. The modem is ready to configure the next time you power it up.

Remember the verizon firmware defaults to 192.168.1.1 for config, so the restored firmware will use that address, unlike the retail firmware which defeaults to 192.168.0.1

Verizon-specific user manual for the GT704-WG?

Does anyone have a copy (or a link to) the Verizon-specific user manual for the Verizon-custom GT704-WG modem?

The user manual at the Actiontec site is for the retail version of the GT704-WG, and it does not apply to the Verizon version of the GT704-WG, since the feature set and configuration is considerably different compared to the retail version.

I think the CD that came with the Verzion version of the GT704-WG has a pdf of the user manual, but I can't find the CD. If anyone has a copy of the user manual, I'd appreciate a copy of it. Thanks.

Your wish is my command and thank you, that worked well and I finally have it back to normal now, also you said it works in XP only, it worked fine on my Windows 2000 Professional.

Here is the manual you requested, straight off the CD.

P.S. Why does the only person that knew how to fix the firmware need a manual? lol.

Background- I accidentally upgraded Actiontec 704wg with Actiontec 701 firmware; now I have no DHCP, HTTPD, TELNETD, etc.. I configured for static IP and tried upgrade to no avail...

I tried the UPGRADE process using the rename *.img file.
It failed ("could net get connection").

Is there a even more basic way of getting my GT704-wg back to life? How do I get DHCP back? Or do I need to? It failed for static IP.

I am about to toss it out the window.

FIX FOR WRONG FLASH! Firmware fix.
Actiontec 704 wg was flashed to be 701.

I used the qwest "firmware recovery" program and replaced the larger 701 *.img file with the 704 recovery *.img.

I then rebooted and then got DHCP address!
I used web browser to 192.168.0.1 --> Got 701 UI! (running on 704 hardware)

Now I used 701 UPGRADE program, using a replaced *.img file from the 704 (as noted above). I followed directions, esp reboot, changed static IP address to 192.168.1.1, and used http to get to 192.168.1.1 (now a *real 704*) not a 701!!!!

I hope this is useful for people who accidentally flashed *wrong* firmware and want to recover... I originally flashed 701 on my 704wg and I got neither 701 nor 704. SO I had to back track and "swap img files" to get back to sane state --> 704wg!

Summary:
0) Accidentally flashed 701 firmware on 704wg hardware
1) Now Actiontec is broken (no dhcp, http, etc..)
2) Use Qwest 701 Recover Firmware using 704 recover .img
3) Now reboot to find 704 looking like 701!
4) Now Qwest 701 Upgrade Firmware using 704 upgrade .img
5) Now reboot and back to *real* 704-wg UI (http)

Don't try this at home -- avoid step 0!

Thanks!

This is the actiontec 704wg firmware.
I got my 704 to boot via 701 Firmware then upgraded using 701 UI to *basic* 704 firmware.

Now I have a "plain 704" again!

Hi all, Well I tried this procedure (Many Times) and still I can't get back to the original verizon firmware. It seems that once you flash to the actiontec basic firmware your stuck. I've tried the 701 704 rename but it will always fail unless the renamed file is the actiontec basic firmware. Now the basic actiontec firmware works fine except for a small loop back problem which really is not that big a deal. Still I'd like to put back the verizon firmware with all of the fancy GUI menus. SO!! If someone out there has done it please tell us what you did.

Thanks,
Another Idiot!!

Here is the Verizon FirmWare:

»download.verizon.net/webdownload···4-wg.img

Use this and follow the instructions in the 4th post and one should be all set. Worked for me.

Also, I have recently moved and no longet have Verizon but I kept the Actiontec. I am now using it on AT&T PPPoE 6 mbps DSL and it works great, hurray to Verizon for not locking the modem to work on their DSL only.

The firmware is the firmware. The link to the 704 file in the first post is the entire verizon gt704wg firmware image.

Is is only the method (or program) used to write said firmware that determines if the write process is 'upgrade' or 'recovery'.

Essentially, for the actiontec modems, 'upgrade' means the modem is booting properly and can initiate a TFTP session at any time, whereas 'recovery' invloves starting the modem in a special way to initiate a TFTP session from a non-volatile routine in the modem. The recovery method is useful when the modem won't boot from the firmware currently installed on the modem.

The Verizon firmware can be written to the modem only using the TFTP utility (such as the one provided by qwest). Either TFTP method works (upgrade or recovery). What does not work is the browser interface firmware updating function.
